A tentokrát opačného pohlaví!

DNF at 12%. Verdict: Eadlyn is an irritating, apathetic, spoiled brat and during the first 34 pages of this book, I felt bad that America and Maxon had to deal with a child like her. I understand that Cass was trying to shake things up, but introducing a new female lead like her didn't cut it. I was really looking forward to this new addition to The Selection series (despite being content with leaving it as a trilogy + novellas), but I was left disappointed.

I have so much I can say about this book. For one, Eadlyn at the beginning was a brat. As I continued to read, I started to understand and empathize with her character. Two, I wish that her Selection journey, in this book, had more romance involved. I felt like it was strictly about her finding herself. I just wish she could’ve also found love along the way. Three, long-live Maxon and America. I love them. I hope Eadlyn finds love in the last book of the series.

The main character annoys me but i still get to finished it. I cant stop comparing it to the first three books and I guess I still liked the first 3.

2.5 ⭐️ It wasn’t a bad book it was just another book in the series to finish to the series. Nothing special. Just another book closer to the ending.

Huh. I can't believe I liked this book. The Heir is the story after Maxon and America's happily ever after. Their firstborn daughter, Princess Eadlyn, has been training her whole life to become Illéa's first queen. When things are starting to look seriously bad for Illéa, with riots, uprisings, prejudice, and whatnot, Maxon and America use their last resort: a Selection for Eadlyn. Which was definitely not what Eadlyn wanted. With a lot of negotiation and mean thoughts on Eadlyn's part, 35 young men are brought to the palace (except Kile since he was already there) and the Selection begins. Okay, okay, I'm gonna say it: Eadlyn is a b*tch. Harsh of me, but I started to dislike her in the middle of the first chapter. That's gotta be a record. Yet, I kept going, because for some reason I have not given up hope on this series. Eadlyn was selfish, spoiled, manipulative, cruel, self-absorbed, etc. etc. etc. and everyone including her beloved brother Ahren knew it. I could pull out sooo many quotations of her complaints, whining, mistreatment of her suitors, but that would take forever since I could probably pull a quotation from every page in the book. She was insufferable. I mean, if I had a to-be queen like that, I'd rebel too. So: why did I still like this book? Because I think that's how Eadlyn was meant to be, and that made the story work. Eadlyn had to be the problem. She's the reason why people were rebelling and angry and scared for the future of Illéa, after all. And I'm pretty sure it's a lot easier to write from the hero's point of view than the not-so-hero's point of view. Props to Kiera Cass for making a completely unlikable character an actually decent one. I say she was an "actually decent" one because throughout the book, Eadlyn changes. You can feel her softening a little. When she pulls away from people, you feel distant too. In some ways, as awful as it sounds, Eadlyn is a really relatable character. She's like, the Inner Jerk inside us all. The one who says "it's not faiiiirrrr" or "how come --- gets ---?!" and pouts all the time. But as the story goes on, she's (finally) starting to realize it too. The suitors were okay. I particularly liked Kile (maaaybe a little because of the childhood-friends-to-possible-couple idea. I'm a sucker for that stuff.) and Henri / Erik (because I have a feeling Erik and Eadlyn have something too.) The ones we were introduced to had individual characters and personalities, but the ones who didn't participate in a date/group date were just names. In fact, the only suitors I can recall now were Kile, Henri/Erik, Hale, Ean, Fox, and... who else? See, that's the problem with having a lot of characters. They become super forgettable. About the dates: I felt like they had a pattern. Group dates were always fun and cutesy or dramatic and usually ended pretty well. One on one dates were when Eadlyn starts to like someone and then suddenly realizes she likes them more than "she should" and runs off to cry in her room because isn't life so confusing when everyone wants you to adore them as much as they adore you?!? I thought the plot was alright, although a bit on the boring side, but it was fascinating to look at the Selection from the Selector's point of view rather than the Selected. I admit Eadlyn was not exactly the Selector Maxon was (I'm sure Maxon was a lot nicer to his Selected). However, they must have experienced the same emotional turmoil. One thing that did let me down about the plot was that, although there's all this action happening, it never directly affects those in the palace. In the first three novels, there were rebel attacks in the palace. Now, all we have to tell that there's actually trouble outside is Maxon's aging and Eadlyn's complaining. Also, Eadlyn complains a lot about how much work she has, but all we ever see her do is date people, worry about her mess of feelings, and complain. So, where is all this work? The story is from her POV so we should see her actually doing her queenly duties, which involve.. being unreasonable to everyone and running away from suitors, apparently. AND YET, although there were so many problems with this book, it was still satisfying to finish and I'm still going to read the last book. *slaps self* I don't know why I bother. But yes, although I'm pretty sure The Heir will be a letdown to those of you who enjoyed the first three books (Eadlyn's a definite downgrade from America), I thought it was a decent book. I doubt I'd read it again, but it wasn't too terrible for a quick read.

If I thought America was annoying at times, her daughter is soo much worse. I loved her brothers' relationship with Camille, and I respect and love his choice so much. I really hope Eadlyn gets her shit together. The boy I like the most is Henri, but she's prob not going to end up with him. The one I hope she ends up with isn't in the competition, if you get who I mean. Loved the little scenes like the cooking date before yk and the baseball scene was very cutee. I read this book so slowly, because I just don't like the main character and just got annoyed after a few pages and then I would be done with the book for atleast 2 business days, lol

The Heir by Kiera Cass was a hot mess for me AND I LOVED IT. When I finished the third book in this series, I thought it was over. It seemed like a good way to end it and I was honestly surprised that the series continued! When I picked this book up, I was even more surprised to see how much I disliked Eadlyn initially. She seemed bratty, selfish, annoying, and all the other bad words I can think for a spoiled monarch who was essentially a nepotism baby. Yet.... I was glued to this book. I started understanding why she was the way she was, and I ended up growing to love her. It felt like watching a soap opera and suddenly I was attached. By the way, Team Kile or Erik. That's where I stand. Please Eadlyn... Don't pick Ean. For one Ean and Eadlyn together don't look great (sorry, but I had to go there) and he just... seems fishy. The ending? Rude. Don't do that. I get why it happened story wise, but... rude. Also, why the cliffhanger?! Why do that to me?! I do in fact have the last book within arm's reach but still. Now back to the review: If you loved America, Eadlyn is NOT going to be your favourite character. She grew up very differently, has a different personality, and overall is just not her Mother. She has her quirks and you can grow to love her, but she's a completely new lead for us to read about. Throw in watching America and Maxon as parents, which is delightful by the way, and you've got a very interesting book. I do find this book is trying to make The Selection to have a bunch of our fave tropes for romance. Some felt like enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, "let's pretend to date but then we end up dating", hot baker guy who doesn't speak the same language... It's just seeing which trope wins out at the end. Overall, a good bingeable read that will infuriate you with the ending. Four out of five stars.

I read the Selection when I was young. I loved it then, and I still enjoy the nostalgia and characters now.

However, this main character really annoyed me. Therefore, I didn’t finish it. Simple as that.

Oh I hate Eadlyn so much. I know she's getting better as a person, but I just don't like her attitude. I don't like her at all. I do love the other characters but I don't like her. Okay, enough about me don't liking Eadlyn. The book is great as always. What really annoys me is that they selected are such jerks. I loved the selection with America and Maxon, but this is different. I'm not going to read the last book any time soon

i really enjoyed the book tbh, however eadlyns character was selfish and super whiny… i saw a huge opportunity for character development towards the end of the book though and i’m sure the second book will honour that! so i’m excited to read it :)

how is she supposed to choose any of these boys though?? they’re all so nice to her and she seems to be getting on with them all more and more everyday ahhhh!

Eadlyn is hard to love, she is annoying and I honestly almost stopped reading the book a few times because of her. However, I gave it a chance and towards the end... When her walls started to crack, I hated her a little less. I can't wait to read "the crown" and see how much more her character grows.

3 stars | This sequel does not justice to the original Selection. I cannot believe Maxon and America would force their daughter to have her own just to their people, this is ridiculous... Eadlyn is a bit of an annoying brat in the beginning, nothing like her mother during her Selection, and I know it's not fair to compare them as they are two individuals, but yeah. I do think she grows a lot as a character and that's always appreciated. She's flawed, she realizes it and she tries to be better. Also, the comment when people wonder if she's a lesbian just because she's independent and questions why she needs a husband to rule. Can we not. But also why isn't the selection open to both genders? I'm kind of over the cliché hetero relationships in YA.
