It all started with WikiLeaks. When it exploded onto the scene in 2007 with documents that brought down a corrupt Kenyan regime, exposed horrific videos of civilian deaths in Iraq, and released a quarter of a million diplomatic cables that sparked new scandals daily, the transnational hacker group emerged from the underground to shock and forever change the world. Julian Assange and his whistleblower organisation have released more classified information than the rest of the mainstream media in its entire history. Admire Assange or revile him, he is the prophet of a coming age of involuntary, radical transparency. Megaleaks: Julian Assange, WikiLeaks, and the End of Institutional Secrets delves into the technological origins of WikiLeaks to show that it's not simply a one-off creation driven by Assange's singular brilliance and hubris. Instead, it's the result of unstoppable trends that are already spawning an entire revolution of copycat and spinoff digital whistleblower factions from Indonesia to Iceland. Through the lens of Assange's extraordinary story, Megaleaks will trace trends in computing, the internet, and cryptography that have led to the triumph of hacktivism and will soon force all organizations to adapt to a world where their secrets can be hemorrhaged onto the web overnight.
