I don't know how to place this novel. It was my first Bernhard, but I don't think it is a good indication of what the rest of his oeuvre will be like. This is a very short novel written without paragraph breaks. It is about friendship and madness and sickness. Bolano actually steals a section of it (moreorless) in 2666. He takes the section where Bernhard is talking about how the healthy cannot stand to be near the sick. Misanthropy and hatred of Austria are abundant, of course.
