Confessions of an English Opium-Eater is an account of the early life and opium addiction of Thomas De Quincey, in prose which is by turns witty, conversational, and nightmarish. 'On the Knocking at the Gate in Macbeth' offers both a small masterpiece of Shakespearian interpretation and a provocative statement of De Quincey's personal aesthetic of contrast and counterpoint. Suspiria de Profundis blends autobiography and philosophical speculation into a series of dazzling prose-poems which explore the mysteries of time, memory, and suffering. 'The English Mail-Coach' develops a richly apocalyptic vision which sets nineteenth-century England's political and imperial grandeur against the suffering and loss of innocence which it entails. This selection presents De Quincey's major works in their original uncut and unrevised versions, which in some cases have not been available for many years.

de Quincey is a very annoying man. Bright, talented, well-meaning, for sure-- but I did not think I was going to make it through this engagement with him, I thought I was going to have to make up a lie to send him out of my house as politely as possible. There's a moment in here where he compares the writings here to an espalier, saying that the tale of his opium dependency is merely a lattice-work on which all manner of beautiful thoughts and images and whatnots can grow. But an espalier with different plants growing on it is not what this is (and by "this" I mean this collection of 4 pieces he wrote)-- this is an espalier espalied over with flowers in wildly varying states of bloom, as well as some fine illustrations of flowers, interesting pieces of string, strips of bacon, and so on. And even though it's a pastiche of occasionally exquisite parts-- that piece of bacon hanging there is perfectly well-cooked, indeed-- it's a chaos that makes one feel nervous and nauseous to look at for too long. And the endnotes add a whole other cringe-inducing dimension: there's regular annotations along the lines of "de Quincey is misquoting a classic work here" or "de Quincey never ended up adding the part he just told you he was going to add" and similar petty meta-failures. 

Honestly, I would never recommend this book to anyone, except maybe some kind of extreme sapiosexual masochist, but I feel bad for de Quincey so I can't bring myself to give it one star.

Thomas De Quincy's autobiographical tract Confessions of an English Opium-Eater is an account, you might have guessed, of the author's struggles and glories with opium. Though he was a brilliant and well educated young man, De Quincy - who had left school and was ashamed to ask for help - entered a period of near-homelessness in the dank London streets. This period of destitution resulted in chronic stomach pains, for which he began to take a tincture of opium, or Laudanum, to combat the pain. These Confessions are the result of a decades-long battle with addiction to the drug, divided into two parts: The Pleasures of Opium, and The Pains of Opium. De Quincy's Confessions earned him fame very quickly when it was released 1822. He was exceedingly well-read in the poetry and literature of the 17th and 18th centuries, which his lavish "impassioned prose" reflects. With virtuosity he describes his early years, from youth to maturity, and his early accounts of using the drug, which he did with restraint. The second part, which describes when he was taking enough opium to kill a donkey, details the fantastical and sometimes horrible visions he experienced while on the the substance. "The sense of space, and in the end, the sense of time, were both powerfully affected. Buildings, landscapes, etc. were exhibited in proportions so vast as the bodily eye is not fitted to conceive. Space swelled, and was amplified to an extent of unutterable infinity." His visions took on vast, Oriental themes, often correlated to Coleridge's Opium-induced poem "Kubla Khan." Since no one had studied the effects of drugs in much detail, De Quincey's account was held as the official reference for generations, often generating criticism that he focused too heavily on the "Pleasures." The "Pains" section however, with its visions of horror and grandeur, certainly could be read as a warning against the drug. That said, his work became a sort of instruction manual for experimentation, and may have lead several writers, including Francis Thompson, William Blair, and perhaps Branwell Brontë, to take the drug. Charles Baudelaire's 1860 translation would then spread the influence of the Confessions into the French-speaking realm.
