This book took me back to the 20th century and to places I have never been. I love everything about this book; Thessaloniki's past and the astounding characters. I was never very interested in any city's past, but this book showed me how important those tiny cities you have never heard of, are of great significance.

this book is... wow. i do think it wouldve been better w/o the whole grandparent / grandson segment bc it kinda detracts from the actual story itself but it's a thematic fit! but also (view spoiler)[the pain and anguish i felt when it was revealed that elias' family was gassed in the train to poland could never rival his but i've never felt anything like that when reading a novel (hide spoiler)]
