La Perle Noire Edited With Grammatical And Explanatory Notes And A French-English Vocabulary (Classic Reprint)
Excerpt from La Perle Noire: Edited With Grammatical And Explanatory Notes And A French-English Vocabulary When Mr. Sardou was requested to be kind enough to allow this novelette to be placed in Hachettes's Series of Modern French Authors, in giving his consent the author called it an ouvrage de jeunesse. A youthful work indeed in the sense that it breathes the lofty and chivalrous spirit of the enthusiastic period of youth, and it certainly has this peculiarity of good fruit that there remains an agreeable fiavour behind it. Many readers may find La Perle noire too short to satisfy them, but short as the work is, it abounds in lively idiomatic phrases which not only teach the use of the French language but exhibit also many of the characteristics of the French nation, and those who read this little book with attention to the rules of gram mar which are illustrated in it may learn a great deal of accidence and syntax in a very pleasant way. If, to facilitate this, I may be allowed to offer a suggestion, it will be that a twofold translation be made of each idiom, the one quite literal, enabling the learner to familiarize himself with its correct use, and the other in a freer style so as to impress upon his memory the exact equivalent in English.
