You cannot read about the First World War without feeling indignant, and this book captures the inconceivably suffering endured. 

Nineteen-year-old Stephen Wraxall has returned to the front after recovering from injury and enduring the heartbreaking loss of his first love. Despite his wounds, Stephen leads the platoon but begins to wonder what he is fighting for. He then meets Private Danny McCormick, a talented young recruit who becomes Stephen’s squire-servant. Haunted by his own memories on the front and his desire to protect Danny’s innocence from the atrocities of war for as long as possible, he takes the new recruit under his wing, where a relationship blossoms. 

The Boy I Loved is a devastating yet compelling read reminiscent of In Memoriam by Alice Winn. Hussey’s writing captures crippling anguish by balancing the true horrors of war with the delicacies of love and friendship.  

Perhaps some aspects I didn’t like, but it is a YA book so that is to be expected.
