           This was underwhelming for me especially after reading Radium Girls. Can't help wondering how much more compelling the story would have been centred on the cruel aunt who had 'drunk too much from the cup of bitterness' or Opal pre-institution vs dull protagonist Zorrie. The author's choice to give her zero introspection or emotional depth left me feeling disconnected.

It was a good, quick read. I liked the references to the radium girls.

I've needed to sit with this book for a few days, and I feel like that's a good thing. 

Though it's novella length, the author has managed to pack an entire lifetime into this story, but it flows incredibly well. Each section of the book is a perfect slice of the life of a woman who's experienced both incredible joy, and utter heartbreak. This isn't a feel-good book, it isn't really even a book that has a "happy ending." What it is, is an honest look into what it is to live a hardworking life, with all its ups and downs and gains and losses along the way. It's short, it's simple, but it's moving and has a way of making you ponder your own life for a moment after you've finished it. 

If quiet, introspective, character-driven novels are your thing, I highly recommend giving this one a read.
