In a complicated year the humor comes across humor and was a delight to read. For any manga fan or someone looking to give it a try without the world at stake overly dramatic storyline. The way of the househusband provides an amusing slice of life set of short story lines.

I love manga that takes something absurd, dials it up a few notches, and manages to successfully apply it across many different scenarios. Gags that don't feel overused, in other words. This manga was a perfect example of what I like and how I like it.

Way of the Househusband follows former Yakuza boss Tatsu (the "Immortal Dragon") as he lives his best life keeping house for his successful career wife. He shops for deals, babysits for neighbors, makes adorable lunches, and treats his wife to small gifts, all while not being very successful at all at escaping his former persona. Turns out it's pretty hard to act like anything other than a Yakuza boss when that's all you knew. 

Throughout this manga we're treated to little vignettes into Tatsu's life-after-gangs. A knife salesman comes knocking, and Tatsu makes him lunch all while silently intimidating the heck out of the salesman. He sets up a Roomba(-like robot), treats it like a gang member in training, and then creates a misunderstanding with neighbors after their cat causes a robot mishap. He offers to babysit for neighbors, tries to keep the kid occupied with gambling games, fails miserably, and when the kid breaks his wife's favorite anime figurine buries it six feet under. It's little scenes like that throughout the manga that really sells this.

I'm so pleased with this series, I look forward to picking up volume two!

After seeing so many hilarious excerpts online I couldn't help myself anymore, I ordered this from my not-so-local comic book store.

Oono's manga about the yakuza crime boss turned doting stay-at-home husband has a very distinct comedic rhythm to it, and I really appreciate the way he uses silent panels to build up tension and delay the punchline. Tatsu is both our point of view character but also unpredictable, unknowable, and the clean art excels at showing how he can't help but look intimidating and unhinged going about his househusbandly duties.

I am maybe a little disappointed at how short and episodic the chapters are -- in each one there's one idea explored, built up until a climax, and then the chapter ends (usually with a cute little bonus punchline, a single drawing on a blank page denoting the changing of chapters). It makes me crave more, but at the same there's always something funny or cute to appreciate in each story (my favourite in this one is the one where Tatsu cleans the house and keeps talking to the Roomba like a lower-rank yakuza henchman). I was also a little disappointed to see that this official translation seems less snappy than the fan translations online (someone googling "how many can one guy take" as he's heading for a fight is funnier than "fight many opponents", though of course I can't say which one is closer to the original text...)

This is some much-needed silliness in a grim time, and I'm definitely going to continue reading this series (though I can tell I'm going to have to pace myself).

I have seen this manga on my Tumblr dashboard a few times here and there, and always pushed it back on my manga TBR pile but after seeing this on Netgalley I just knew I had to dive right on it and I have no regrets.
 
“The Way of the Househusband” refreshing concept revolves around a former yakuza legend, ‘The Immortal Dragon’ who leaves behind his former lifestyle to become your everyday househusband. It was refreshing, unexpected, original and more comical than I anticipated so kudos to the author for this amazing gag comic! I know it’s only a matter of time before this is adapted to an anime, so that’s something else to look forward to.

this is one of my favorite things i've read in a while. super funny. even if you don't like manga, i highly suggest you read this because it's amazing. basically this former yakuzu boss gets married and becomes a house husband. but he won't just be a regular house husband, he's going to be the best one you've ever seen.

This is hands down one of the funniest things I’ve ever read. The simple day to day tasks of our wonderful househusband turn into hilarious hijinks. I read this mostly in one sitting and will definitely devour the rest of the series when I get a chance.

I went into this,thinking I might like it. Not really sure. Then, low and behold it's on sale and I grabbed it faster than I grab sushi on pay day.

I really liked this manga! I thought it was really funny and entertaining, but looking at it from a reviewer stand-point, I do think it could've used a bit more development, plot-wise. Other than that though, I really did enjoy it and look forward to reading the continuations!
