When Lady Bird tries to guilt her into being nicer, asking, rhetorically, if she ever wished her own mother had been easier on her as a teen, Marion replies that her mother was an abusive alco- holic-a reminder that not every girl like Lady Bird gets a mother like Marion, and not every woman like Marion gets a daughter like Lady Bird. Their dynamic isn't recognizable because it's common, let alone relatable; the specificity of the way they can love each other, fiercely protective and with many painful resentments all at once, is what mnakes this fictional family so real.
