Die aber trinken den Alkohol, mit dem eigentlich die Fundstücke konserviert werden sollten; und Horden von Ameisen machen sich über die Sammlung her. Auf dem Rückweg setzt Wallace alles auf eine Karte: Er selbst, seine Aufzeichnungen und Zigtausende Sammlungsstücke treten auf dem Zweimaster Helen die Heimreise an. Auf hoher See bricht an Bord ein Feuer aus. Die Besatzung kann sich auf Beiboote retten. Doch für Wallace' Sammlung, auch für die lebenden Affen und Vögel, die in England an Zoos und Sammler verkauft werden sollten, gibt es keine Rettung. Nur einen einzigen Papagei kann Wallace lebend aus dem Wasser fischen. Der gesamte Ertrag seiner Reise versinkt in den Fluten des Ozeans. Zurück in England, rekonstruiert Wallace seine Erlebnisse anhand von wenigen Notizen und Erinnerungen. Seinen Reisebericht, sowohl Abenteuerroman, Forschungsgeschichte und frühes Zeugnis der Suche nach dem Ursprung der Arten, gab es auf Deutsch nur 1855 in einer stark verstümmelten Fassung – nun, nach über 150 Jahren, wird er endlich für die deutschsprachige Leserschaft erschlossen!

IT was on the morning of the 26th of May, 1848, that after a short passage of twenty-nine days from Liverpool, we came to anchor opposite the southern entrance to the River Amazon, and obtained our first view of South America. In the afternoon the pilot came on board, and the next morning we sailed with a fair wind up the river, which for fifty miles could only be distinguished from the ocean by its calmness and discoloured water, the northern shore being invisible, and the southern at a distance of ten or twelve miles. Early on the morning of the 28th we again anchored; and when the sun rose in a cloudless sky, the city of Pará, surrounded by the dense forest, and overtopped by palms and plantains, greeted our sight, appearing doubly beautiful from the presence of those luxuriant tropical productions in a state of nature, which we had so often admired in the conservatories of Kew and Chatsworth. The canoes passing with their motley crews of Negroes and Indians, the vultures soaring overhead or walking lazily about the beach, and the crowds of swallows on the churches and house-tops, all served to occupy our attention till the Custom-house officers visited us, and we were allowed to go on shore. Pará contains about 15,000 inhabitants, and does not cover a great extent of ground; yet it is the largest city on the greatest river in the world, the Amazon, and is the capital of a province equal in extent to all Western Europe. It is the residence of a President appointed by the Emperor of Brazil, and of a Bishop whose see extends two thousand miles into the interior, over a country peopled by countless tribes of unconverted Indians. The province of Pará is the most northern portion of Brazil, and though it is naturally the richest part of that vast empire, it is the least known, and at present of the least commercial importance. The appearance of the city from the river, which is the best view that can be obtained of it, is not more foreign than that of Calais or Boulogne. The houses are generally white, and several handsome churches and public buildings raise their towers and domes above them. The vigour of vegetation is everywhere apparent. The ledges and mouldings support a growth of small plants, and from the wall-tops and window-openings of the churches often spring luxuriant weeds and sometimes small trees. Above and below and behind the city, as far as the eye can reach, extends the unbroken forest; all the small islands in the river are wooded to the water's edge, and many sandbanks flooded at high-water are covered with shrubs and small trees, whose tops only now appeared above the surface. The general aspect of the trees was not different from those of Europe, except where the "feathery palm-trees" raised their graceful forms; but our imaginations were busy picturing the wonderful scenes to be beheld in their dark recesses, and we longed for the time when we should be at liberty to explore them.

Travels on the Amazon

Wallace's Malay Archipelago is a classic account of the travels of a Victorian naturalist through island Southeast Asia. It has been loved by readers ever since its publication in 1869. Despite numerous modern reprints with appreciative introductions, this is the first - and long overdue - annotated edition in English. This edition explains, updates and corrects the original text with an historical introduction and hundreds of explanatory notes. Wallace left hundreds of people, places, publications and species unidentified. He referred to most species only with the scientific name current at the time. Whenever available, the common names for species have been provided, and scientific names updated. The content of the book has never been thoroughly analysed and compared against other contemporary sources. It turns out that the book contains many errors. This includes not just incorrect dates and place names but some of the most remarkable anecdotes; for example, the dramatic claim that tigers "kill on an average a Chinaman every day" in Singapore or that a Dutch Governor General committed suicide by leaping from a waterfall on Celebes. By correcting the text of the Malay Archipelago against Wallace's letters and notebooks and other contemporary sources and by enriching it with modern identifications this edition reveals Wallace's work as never before.

Wallace noticed on expeditions to the Amazon and the Malay archipelego that mammals in Southeast Asia are more advanced than their Australian cousins. His suggestion was that the two continents had split before the better adapted mammals had evolved in Asia. The isolated Australian marsupials were able to thrive, whilst those in Asia were driven to extinction by competition from more advanced mammals. This led to his theory of natural selection, which he presented to the Linnean Society in 1858 with Charles Darwin. This volume reprints those papers presented to the Linnean Society.

Travels on the Amazon presents adventurous chronicles of Alfred Russel Wallace's travels to the Amazon rainforests of Brazil in South America. Inspired by the travelogues of earlier and contemporary traveling naturalists, including Charles Darwin and specifically William Henry Edwards, Wallace was determined to go on an expedition abroad as a naturalist. In 1848, he and Henry Bates left for Brazil. They intended to gather insects and other animal specimens in the Amazon Rainforest for their private collections. They wanted to sell the duplicates to museums and collectors in Britain to fund the trip. Wallace also hoped to gather evidence of the changes in the species. Wallace and Bates spent most of their first year collecting near Belém, then examined inland separately. They sometimes met to discuss their findings. Wallace spent four years analyzing the inhabitants and the languages he encountered, along with the geography, flora, and fauna. After returning to the U.K., he wrote several papers and books about his ventures and findings. This wonderful book is one of his impressive travel books.
