Annie Besant was a prominent British socialist, Theosophist, women's rights activist, writer and orator and supporter of Irish and Indian self-rule. In 1890 Besant met Helena Blavatsky and over the next few years her interest in Theosophy grew while her interest in secular matters waned. She became a member of the Society and a highly successful lecturer in Theosophy. As part of her Theosophy-related work, she travelled to India where in 1898 she helped establish the Central Hindu College, and in 1902 she established the first overseas Lodge of the International Order of Co-Freemasonry, Le Droit Humain in England. Over the next few years she established lodges in many parts of the British Empire. In 1907 she became President of the Theosophical Society. L’idée de la réincarnation n’est plus regardée en Occident comme absurde. Elle s’élève graduellement au rang d’une hypothèse possible, qui doit être prise en considération, comme pouvant expliquer des phénomènes apparemment sans rapport entre eux. L’Occident rejoint ainsi les grandes religions de l’Orient, où la doctrine de la réincarnation était considérée comme une évidence. Aux Indes, de même qu’en Égypte, la réincarnation a été la racine de l’éthique. Elle apparaît dans des passages divers du Nouveau Testament, par exemple lorsque Jean-Baptiste est considéré comme la réincarnation d’Élie, ou lorsque les disciples demandent si l’homme, né aveugle, souffre pour les péchés de ses parents ou pour un de ses péchés antérieurs. Annie Besant, présente ici la réincarnation comme une hypothèse séduisante et probable au cours des siècles, et jette la lumière sur le problème de la constitution de l’homme, et de sa destinée. Conférencière, féministe, libre-penseuse, socialiste et théosophe britannique, qui prit part à la lutte ouvrière avant de diriger la Société théosophique, puis de lutter pour l'indépendance de l'Inde. En 1889, William Thomas Stead, rédacteur en chef de la Pall Mall Gazette, lui demanda d'écrire un compte-rendu de l'ouvrage d'Helena Blavatsky, la Doctrine Secrète, qui lui fit découvrir la théosophie. Elle y trouva les réponses à ses interrogations métaphysiques et spirituelles et s'y convertit rapidement. Elle devint une des dirigeantes de la société théosophique. En 1893, elle partit s'installer en Inde où était basée la société. Là, elle adopta et éduqua Krishnamurti pour qui elle devint une mère spirituelle. Elle prit la direction de la Société théosophique en 1907 et l'assuma jusqu'à sa mort en 1933. En Inde, elle s'engagea pour l'auto-détermination, puis l'indépendance du pays, par des articles, des discours et des activités éducatrices. Elle mécontenta le pouvoir britannique qui l'assigna à résidence en 1917 mais dut la relâcher rapidement sous la pression de l'opinion publique indienne. La même année, Annie Besant fut élue présidente du Parti du Congrès. Elle s'effaça peu à peu face à Gandhi et consacra les dernières années de sa vie à la théosophie.
