The Gothic

In 1967 the critic Germano Celant defined as Arte Povera ("poor art") theork of 13 world renowned young Italian artists. The works by visual artist and filmmaker Hito Steyerl (Munich, 1966), one of the most influential cultural figures of our time. Steyerl's works are critical reflections on the digital and contemporary age and focus on the pervasive role of technology and the circulation of images in the globalized world. Her installations, which encompass film and visual art, are immersive architectural environments that seek to establish the way in which technology and Artificial Intelligence shape reality and how it is experienced. This catalogue accompanies the exhibition The City of Broken Windows at Castello di Rivoli and features previously unpublished essays by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and Marianna Vecellio, the exhibition's curators, and by the feminist art historian Griselda Pollock. It also contains two new texts by the artist entitled The City of Broken Windows (2018) and The City of Unbroken Windows (2018), published here for the first time, and her important essay In Defense of the Poor Image (2009). This catalogue of the Spring 2003 exhibition at the Castello di Rivoli explores the ways in which contemporary artists are engaging with modernism and modernity today. It presents sculpture, installations, projections, painting, and drawing by over 20 artists, including Haluk Akakce, Ricci Albenda, Tacita Dean, Tom Friedman, Liam Gillick, Arturo Herrera, Jim Lambie, Daria Martin, Julie Mehretu, Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba, Jorge Pardo, Paul Pfeiffer, Simon Starling, Sarah Sze, Piotr Uklanski and Gary Webb. Few stories in the history of photography are as astonishing and compelling as that of the octogenarian Czech photographer Miroslav TichyÌ. With crude homemade cameras fashioned out of cardboard and duct tape, TichyÌ took several thousand pictures of the women of his Moravian hometown of Kyjov throughout the 1960s and 70s. These pictures of women going about their daily business are at once banal and extraordinary, transforming the ordinary moments of work and leisure into small epiphanies. Blurred and off-kilter, his photographs have a striking contemporaneity, resembling the early paintings of Gerhard Richter or the photographs of Sigmar Polke. Printed imperfectly and deliberately battered, they evince a surprisingly retrograde or even antimodernist feeling, which, in the context of the Cold War atmosphere of provincial Czechoslovakia, just before and after the liberalizing moment of the Prague Spring (1968), undoubtedly constituted a kind of oblique political provocation, a nose-thumbing response to the progressive realist perfectionism of official Soviet culture. After studying at the Academy of Arts in Prague, Miroslav TichyÌ (born 1926) withdrew to a life in isolation in his hometown of Kyjov, Moravia, Czech Republic. In the late 1950s, he quit painting and became a distinctive Diogeneslike figure, in part as a political response to the social repressions of Czech communism. It is only in the past five years that his intensely private work has gained international public attention. Co-published with International Center of Photography, New York.

Pierre Huyghe's reputation in the international contemporary art scene is based on installations, films, and collaborative projects that probe our collective imagination. His works tend to generate a sense of instability by imposing unusual strategies of perception on the narrative structures through which it is constructed. They engage the observers, causing their own stock of visual images and individual memories to interact with the artificial memory of the media. The experience often underlines the rift that is produced between the real and its representation, especially in the means of communication used by the entertainment industry. Castello di Rivoli has organized an ambitious Huyghe retrospective and this catalogue-with a special pop up insert-presents all aspects of his oeuvre, including Blance-Neige Lucie, No Ghost Just a Shell, Sleeptalking, and a new work, Float, created for the show. The catalog includes a broad selection of Huyghe's own writings as well as extracts by other contemporary artists and critics, including a major essay by Carolyn Christov-Barkargiev, and a complete bio-bibliography.

Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev reflects on the historical as well as personal notion of destruction and art, as well as on the potential healing power that art can have. Guiding us through a web of etymological, historical, philosophical, personal, and art historical references, she takes the reader from Melanie Klein’s thinking about the dyadic relationship between mother and child and Walter Benjamin’s reflection on Klee’s Angelus Novus, to object studies starting with Man Ray’s metronomes, his Objects of Destruction, and Lee Miller’s photographs from the end of World War II, to Gustav Metzger’s “Manifesto of Auto-Destruction,” to melted objects from the Beirut National Museum and the blown-up Bamiyan Buddhas, which are accompanied by Michael Petzet’s report of ICOMOS’s response to the destroyed monuments, followed by artworks by Michael Rakowitz and drawings with poems by Anna Boghiguian, in addition to a postscript by art historian Dario Gamboni on the destruction of art, the concept of “world heritage,” and the legislation around it. The Painting of Modern Life

Until now , there has been no monograph on Hans Hartung, the German born French painter (1904 -1989) available in French or English. Now, to celebrate the centenary of his birth, a monogram of this artist will be published to mark the occasion. Hartung's reputation was established when he was awarded the International Grand Prix for his paintings at the 1960 Venice Biennale. He had rejected the early influence of German expressionism and developed an entirely abstract style in which a strong linear element created a rhythmic unity. To survey his huge work, the book Hartung offers ten perspectives of leading art historians, curators and international artists.
