"An immense blue sky speckled with floating spheres and inscribed with the names of illustrious Greek sculptors now decorates the ceiling of the Salle des bronzes Antiques, the prestigious "Great Hall' situated in the oldest part of the palace. Today, over a thousand bronzes and nearly a hundred pieces of jewelry are housed in this room, attesting to the splendour of the Greek, Italic and Roman cultures that flourished from the ninth century BC to the sixth century AD. Cy Twombly is the third contemporary artist, after Anselm Kiefer and Francois Morellet, to be commissioned for an installation at the Louvre. The years 1970-71 were a very prolific period in which Cy Twombly, influenced by Leonardo da Vinci's Deluge drawings, created his iconic style: scribbled, calligraphic, and graffiti-like works on solid fields. In the late Kirk Varnedoe's words, this--most minimal-- phase of Twombly's oeuvre is characterized by a "nervous, obsessed energy, yet its trance-like mono - tony also opens out into a sense of serene, oceanic dissolution, in a nebular cloud of great depth and infinite complexity". His drawings of this phase featured in Vol. V of his Catalogue Raisonné of Drawings include, among others, acclaimed extensive series such as Roman Notes, Study for Treatise on the Veil, and Beyond (A System of Passing).

A visual celebration of one of the most renowned artists of our time, along with the extraordinary Gallery he helped to create to showcase his work American artist Cy Twombly (1928-2011) created paintings and sculptures that defied conventional classification. In his works, Twombly incorporated a wide variety of elements, from scrawls and calligraphic marks to text from poetry and mythology. Opening in 1995, the Cy Twombly Gallery at the Menil Collection was designed by Renzo Piano and has become a pilgrimage destination for the artist's avid admirers. The product of close collaboration between the Menil, Twombly, and the Dia Center for the Arts, the Gallery is one of the most extraordinary representations of any single 20th-century artist. Twombly chose the art that would be featured and worked closely with the builders to create the most appropriate venue for its presentation. This sumptuous volume showcases thirty-three paintings and eleven sculptures, including an immense 13 x 52-foot painting. Featuring large-scale, close-up details of many of the works, the book looks at paint, plaster, paintings, sculptures, and the "cues" that Twombly gave in his art about this special collection. Cy Twombly, born in Lexington, Virginia, in 1928, entered the stage of contemporary art with his drawings. His nervous line making distinguished him from all his colleagues who in the 50s and 60s were involved in Abstract Expressionism. His tumbling and nervous marking opened new psychological spaces to a personal and very conceptual art. At first mistaken for something between graffiti and ecriture automatique, Cy Twombly's graphic notes eventually transformed into huge canvases of paintings in which he incorporated these notes as a maelstrom of emotional states. The Catalogue Raisonne of Drawings, edited by Nicola Del Roscio, is published in five volumes. Volume 3, covering the years 1961-1963, documents the explosion of color in the artist's works on paper.

A Retrospective

The American artist Cy Twombly is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Starting off from abstract expressionism, he developed his own original style using writing-like signs which he exaggerated in size into monumental, large-format canvases. The presentation at the MUMOKthe first in Austriabrings together works from all periods of his oeuvre and presents a new cycle of works specially created for the show. Twombly's pictures and sculptures evoke the ancient myths of the Mediterranean world though it is the incidental and underlying that is the focal point. The alternation between sensitivity and vulgarity, filigree technique and expressivity constitute the enormous tension in the works. The exhibition, presented as a retrospective, brings together genres that, up until now, have generally been shown separately sculpture, painting, drawing, graphic works, and photographs.

This book accompanies the exhibition Cy Twombly: Paradise at Museo Jumex in Mexico City from June 4-October 12, 2014. This is the first time a comprehensive exhibition of the American artist Cy Twombly's work has been mounted in Latin America. The exhibition and book include works on paper, paintings, and sculpture that span Twombly's career, from early works of the 1950s to the Camino Real series of paintings that he completed shortly before his death in 2011. The book includes 57 works of art, along with double-page, full-bleed detail photographs that capture Twombly's dramatic gestural style and lush palette.

Cy Twombly is undoubtedly the most sensitive mind among the greats of contemporary art. His work finds its most personal expression in small, intimately sized drawings which he has from the very outset produced as of accompaniments to his paintings: they not only reflect all the stages in the development of his painterly oeuvre but also transcend it. Our book now available as a softcover reprint covers the major retrospective which the Hermitage organized to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the City of St. Petersburg. The eighty-four drawings, most of them from the artist's own collection, date from between 1953 and 2002 and thus embrace his entire oeuvre, from the early monotypes to the major mythological cycles of later years. This unique retrospective on fifty years of his marvelous drawings fully reveals just how fascinating Twombly's aesthetic approach is and attests to his great talent for invention.

Fifty Years of Works on Paper

Though perhaps best known for his paintings, Cy Twombly (1928-2011) developed a singular body of sculpture over the course of his 60-year career. These sculptures are made from quotidian materials such as wood, metal and found objects, to which he applied a delicate and unifying layer of white paint. The resulting group of works appear not so much as a progression as a series as they do, individually, as a metamorphosis of material. This book marks the long-term exhibition of five Twombly sculptures at Glenstone Museum. The catalogue includes an original essay by scholar Kate Nesin and never-before-published archival images of the sculptures in the artist's studios in Italy courtesy of the Nicola Del Roscio Archives.

Cy Twombly's photographs are a late blessing from the hand of one of the most innovative American artists. Along with peonies, tulips are his floral passion. This small book accompanies a show of his tulip photographs at Schirmer/Mosel Showroom, Munich, in June. They captivate the viewer by the subtle irresistibility of sepia-toned dryprints. The prints will be complemented by poetry selected by the artist.
