P. 샌더스의 혁명적인 바울 연구서 『바울과 팔레스타인 유대교: 40주년 기념 한국어판』은 팔레스타인 유대교와 바울의 종교 패턴을 분석하여 비교한 책이다. 저자는 팔레스타인 유대교에 대한 1차 자료를 섭렵하였다. 기원전 200년부터 기원후 200년까지의 유대교 자료를 히브리어 및 헬라어로 연구하면서, 자신의 이론을 위해 부분만 발췌하지 않고 그 전체적인 종교 패턴을 드러냈다. 방대한 자료를 꼼꼼하게 원전으로 읽고 해석한 일도 뛰어난 업적이지만, 저자는 이 모든 다채로운 색상을 하나로 희석시키려 하지 않는다. 직접 1차 자료를 봤기에 그 안에 있는 다양성을 무시할 수 없었다. 그래서 샌더스는 하나의 시각을 바탕으로 구성된 “조직신학”을 억지로 만들어내려 하지 않고, “종교 패턴”을 제시한다. 이 종교 패턴이라는 단어는 사실 이 책의 부제, “종교 패턴 비교”에서도 등장한다. 종교 패턴이란 단순히 본질들(믿음 대 행위, 자유 대 율법 등)을 비교하거나 개개 모티프들을 비교하는 것과는 다르다. 샌더스가 정의하는 종교 패턴은 “그 종교 신자들이 기능을 따라 그 종교를 이해한 내용을 묘사한 것이다”(p. 65). 더불어 샌더스는 제2성전 사상에 관한 다소 독자적인 해석을 독자에게 선사하면서도 자신과 유사한 연구를 선행 학자들의 목소리를 듣는 일을 절대 게을리하지 않았다. 이 책의 원서는 1977년에 출간되었고, 한국어판은 2018년에야 출간이 되었는데 한국어판 출간 이후 내용이 방대하며 (1176페이지), 인용하는 일차 자료가 너무 많고, 세부적인 논의도 복잡하여 전체 내용을 이해하고 소화하기가 쉽지 않은 게 단점이었다. 이것이 ‘간추린판’이 나오게 된 배경이다. ‘간추린판’은 긴 호흡의 논증을 읽다가 놓치기 쉬운 주제 단락을 돋보이게 할 것, 샌더스가 인용하는 일차 자료를 최소한의 양이라도 포함시켜 독자가 유대 문헌을 직접 읽는 경험을 할 수 있게 할 것, 샌더스 스스로 던지는 질문들과 그가 해답을 찾아가는 과정을 간략하게나마 남겨놓을 것, 그리고 가급적 샌더스의 바울 해석 부분을 많이 남길 것 등 이 네 가지를 기준으로 바울 연구자인 김선용이 간추리는 작업을 통해서 탄생하게 되었다.
