Edward Carpenter

Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) was an English socialist poet, an anthologist, and an early homosexual activist. He joined the Church of England as a curate and was influenced by the Christian Socialist movement. He travelled to Ceylon and India in 1890 and studied eastern religions. He developed a kind of "mystic socialism" which produced campaigns against air pollution and vivisection, promoted vegetarianism and "rational dress." In the 1890s, Carpenter began a campaign against sexual orientation discrimination. His 1908 book The Intermediate Sex, would become a foundational text of the LGBT movements of the 20th century. His groundbreaking 1908 anthology of poems, Lolaus: Anthology of Friendship was a huge underground success, leading to a more advanced knowledge of homoerotic culture.

Late studies in the Psychology of Sex have led to some interesting speculations with regard to the poet Shelley; and it is with pleasure that I write a few lines by way of introduction to the following paper by my friend, George Barnefield, which puts very clearly, as I think, some points in Shelley's temperament which have hitherto been neglected or misunderstood, and which call for renowned consideration. Not having myself made a special study of the Modern Psychology, I do not pretend to certify to the absolute truth of the theories put forward by Mr. Barnefield, but I do certainly think, after due consideration, that they are worthy of very careful study.

This book provides a systematic and logical approach to the origins of religion. Many common themes are shown to exist between Christianity and earlier Pagan religions that go back in time centuries before Christianity itself. Carpenter makes an effort to get to the very roots of religion in this book. He's trying to uncover where our religious concepts first originated, and reveals an evolutionary sequence which starts with phallic and procreative cults as having the earliest known impact. Following this came a cult of magic, much along the lines of Frazier's The Golden Bough, where spirits and earth divinities were worshipped. Lastly, came the belief in actual God-figures that came down from heaven. A big part of early religion also concerns the consciousness which is generally found today. Lastly, and most importantly. Carpenter mentions a third type of consciousness found in many of the rites and beliefs of ancient religions, but which we seem to have lost today. He considers this form of consciousness "unnamed, " but provides an Appendix on the doctrines of the Upanishads which, he says, at least gives us an idea concerning this third stage of consciousness and the mental attitude required. Only here, in this higher stage that we've been striving for, are the real facts of the inner life found.

Samuel Carpenter (1649-1728), a Quaker, immigrated from England to Barbados in 1671, and immigrated to Philadelphia in 1683. He married Jane Hardiman in 1684. Descendants lived throughout the United States.
