This book provides a collaborative reassessment of Pompey’s campaigns in the Greek East, the ensuing political settlement, and the consequences they had in Rome and in Italy. An international group of scholars offers a fresh reconsideration of a dossier that has received much attention over the centuries, albeit usually through the somewhat limiting (if crucially informative) prism of Greek and Latin textual sources. By adopting a more capacious approach, encompassing traditions that found room in Jewish, Byzantine, and Syriac authors, and providing new discussions of the epigraphical and numismatic evidence, this volume brings into sharper focus the ambition and significance of Pompey’s intervention. The long-term engagement of the Roman commander in the region emerges as a moment that had profound implications to the history of the Roman empire, marked a controversial turning point in internal politics, and set the Roman presence in the Eastern Mediterranean on a new footing. It was the opening act of a new season of Roman geopolitics that would go on to shape the longer-term trajectory of the empire.

The world portrayed by ancient declamation is often thought to be timeless; but it was in fact deeply rooted in the historical texture of the Roman Empire. The central aim of the volume is to recover this historical dimension, with particular reference to the so-called Major Declamations, a collection wrongly attributed to Quintilian, and now generally thought to be the work of several authors of the second and third centuries AD. Accordingly, many of the twenty studies collected here seek to anchor the Maiores to their period, exploring their chronology and authorship; their relationship to rhetorical education, Greek declamation, and philosophy; their depiction of earlier history; and their reflection of contemporary socio-cultural trends. Other essays concern their connection with legal theory and practice, and the relationship between juridical and declamatory language, real and fictitious court cases. A final set of studies focuses on the period when the collection was assembled (fourth century AD), reconstructing the late-antique forebear of all the extant manuscripts, speculating on the criteria which may have governed the selection of the pieces. The medieval reception of the Maiores is also investigated.

Écrire un manuel d’histoire et d'archéologie des « mondes romains » avec une trentaine d'enseignants chercheurs, c'est adopter un parti-pris original : celui de poser des questions, de donner à voir la fabrique de l'histoire, de faire confiance à l'intelligence collective et au goût de la recherche, à la curiosité. Une équipe à la fois internationale et pluridisciplinaire cherche, ici, à saisir l’apport spécifique de l’archéologie et des diverses sciences humaines dans la compréhension des mondes romains pour produire une histoire renouvelée. Elle livre l’état d'un certain nombre de questions, à partir de deux sciences pluridisciplinaires, qui connaissent des renouvellements épistémologiques constants. La démarche retenue refuse le prisme déformant qui considère qu'il existe un « monde romain » unifié par le droit, le pouvoir, l'économie, la culture, autour d'un centre de pouvoir unique, Rome, décisionnel, ayant une « politique impériale ». Cette approche n'admet pas que le « monde romain » par son extension, par ses villes, par la forme de domination de sa Capitale soit perçu comme un exemple unique, universel, propre au « génie romain », « à l'identité romaine » résultat d'une sorte d'essentialisme romain « frugal, paysan » éternel et constant durant au moins huit siècles et en tout lieu. Tout autant que le monde grec, le monde romain, quelle que soit la période où on l'étudie, dépasse largement le cadre géographique et civilisationnel de la Méditerranée. Il est divers, multiple, complexe. Tenter de renouveler l'histoire des mondes romains sur une période allant de l'archaïsme à l'antiquité tardive est une gageure, tant les sources et les milieux sont variés, et différents les modes de conservation des objets. Il y a donc plusieurs histoires et plusieurs archéologies des « mondes romains ».

An interdisciplinary approach, crucial as it is in most fields of research, proves itself to be unescapable in the study of interactions between the ancient Armenian and Greek worlds and literatures. The volume arises from such an awareness and collects papers presented in a conference which has been organized in 2013 at the University of Genova, thanks to a cooperation with the Université Paris-Sorbonne, following in the footsteps of a tradition inaugurated by Giancarlo Bolognesi in the years '80 and '90. The subject is explored from many points of view: the topic of Armenian translations of Greek texts – with considerations of a methodological nature and the discussion of case-studies –, aspects which pertain to the historical context and the historiographical sources, the wide theme of the Armenian reception of Biblical, Christian and Byzantine literature, and finally philological, linguistic and lexical problems. The aim of this kind of research is to exploit the cooperation among classical philologists, linguists and Armenologists, in order to face the challenge of investigating a subject which requires many different competences.
