With his astounding building cuts and intersects, Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978) opened up elegant geometries in the very structures that seem most substantial and most authoritative in urban existence, revealing the alienations of the urban fabric as convenient fictions and allowing life to flow into the most inhospitable and self-contained of buildings. One of his favorite responses to a work came from a Parisian concierge: "I see the purpose for that hole--it is an experiment in bringing light and air into spaces that never had enough of either." Throughout his all-too-brief career, Matta-Clark undertook civic aeration on many fronts, cofounding the now legendary Food Restaurant in 1971, buying up empty lots in Queens and evolving his theory of "anarchitecture" in films, photomontages and numerous writings and drawings. Anarchitecture redefined negative space in art as a political act, distinguishing itself from architecture by imagining a cure for its most pernicious effects. Gordon Matta-Clark: Moment to Moment offers a comprehensive overview of this courageous and liberating artist with a wealth of documentation and reproductions from across Matta-Clark's oeuvre, as well as critical commentary from Philip Ursprung, Angela Lammert, Hubertus von Amelunxen, Dan Graham and others.

"Dirk Braeckman's work brings stillness to today's steady tide of images. Working with analogue photography, he explores the boundaries of his medium and challenges photographic conventions. His chosen subjects are recognizable, yet flirt with representation, abstraction and the reality of what is shown. Braeckman creates images with a special charge, which withhold as well as divulge information, giving them the power to hold the viewer's gaze. Dirk Braeckman represents Belgium at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017."

Wim Wenders' fame stems primarily from his motion pictures such as Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire, and Pina, yet the filmmaker admits: "Photography is the other half of my life." In honor of his 70th birthday in 2015, the Dusseldorf Museum Kunstpalast is exhibiting large-format photographs and landscape panoramas. "When you're on the go a lot," Wim Wenders writes, "when you like to meander in order to lose yourself, you can end up in the strangest places. It must be a sort of built-in radar that often guides me into areas that are either peculiarly quiet or else peculiar in a quiet way." Unlike the filmmaker, Wenders dispenses with modern technical contrivances as a photographer. He prefers analog photography, without artificial lght or a tripod. The exhibition catalogue will feature his series Written in the West, Buena Vista Social Club, Once, Pictures from the Surface of the Earth, and Journey to Onomichi, among others.
