International Center of Photography

Organized and written by renowned scholar and ICP Adjunct Curator Okwui Enwezor, Archive Fever presents works by leading contemporary artists who use archival documents to rethink the meaning of identity, history, memory, and loss. Over the past thirty years, successive generations have taken wide-ranging approaches to the photographic and filmic archive. The works presented here take many forms, including physical archives arranged by peculiar cataloguing methods, imagined biographies of fictitious persons, collections of found and anonymous photographs, film versions of photographic albums, and photomontages composed of historical photographs. These images have a wide-ranging subject matter yet are linked by the artists shared meditation on photography and film as the quintessential media of the archive. Artists in the exhibition include Tacita Dean, Stan Douglas, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Zoe Leonard, Ilán Lieberman, Walid Raad, Thomas Ruff, Anri Sala, Fazal Sheikh, Eyal Sivan, Lorna Simpson, and Vivan Sundaram, among others.

The photographs of Ralph Eugene Meatyard defy convention: they have been called visionary, surrealistic, and meditative. Whatever the label, these evocative images of friends and family and the natural world around his home illustrate a delicate psychology of human interaction. Meatyard was trained as an optician, a profession that he maintained all his life in Lexington, Kentucky; he bought a camera in 1950 for the sole purpose of photographing his first-born son. But shortly thereafter, he joined the Lexington Camera Club and developed a friendship with his photography teacher Van Deren Coke, as well as a circle of local writers and photographers, including Guy Davenport, Thomas Merton, Wendell Berry, Jonathan Williams, and Minor White. Family and friends freely participated in Meatyard's staged and mysterious images, which often involve masks and abandoned spaces, and obliquely reference social, political, and cultural issues. A key subject in Meatyard's work is the natural environment, which is featured in his Light on Water series, in which long exposures seem to create calligraphic texts, and his No-Focus series, in which he deliberately photographed stems and twigs out of focus. In one of his last series titled Motion-Sound, the pictures were made by moving the camera gently, creating multiple exposures of the woodland scenes that suggest abstract sound patterns. The book accompanies an exhibition organized by ICP Assistant Curator Cynthia Young with acclaimed writer and Meatyard friend, Guy Davenport, who also wrote the text. Also included are the exhibition history, chronology, and bibliography.

Gustav Klutsis and Valentina Kulagina: Photography and Montage After Constructivism is an in-depth study of the work of Gustav Klutsis, the pioneer of photomontage in the Soviet Union and a central figure in the transition from the formalism of the early Soviet avant-garde to the increasingly state-sponsored art production of the 1930s. Also presented is the work of Klutsis's wife and colleague, Valentina Kulagina, an innovative poster, book, and exhibition designer, who participated in such seminal exhibitions as the 1928 Pressa exhibition in Cologne. Photography and Montage After Constructivism includes the artists' important public works - street displays, posters, and book and magazine desigs - as well as intimate family portraits and experimental photographs and photomontages. Drawing from her research at Russian archives and on previously unavailable information contained in the artists' letters and diaries - many translated here for the first time - art historian Margarita Tupitsyn offers new insights on the artists and the political and cultural climate in which they were working.

Presenting the works of forty contemporary artists from around the world, Strangers: The First ICP Triennial of Photography and Video explores the different roles that photography now plays in negotiating the boundaries between trust and fear, intimacy and isolation, and public and private life. Accompanying a major exhibition organized by the International Center of Photography in New York, Strangers investigates, as well, the social consequences of globalization through images emanating from encounters between people unknown to one another. Strangers includes original essays. There are, in addition, illuminating commentaries on each of the artists, and reproductions of approximately 200 works in a variety of mediums, from traditional photographic processes and to multimedia installations and video. Among the artists included in the exhibition are Philip-Lorca DiCorcia, Luc Delahaye, David Goldblatt, Bill Henson, Chien-Chi Chang, Susan Meiselas, Harun Farocki, and Shirin Neshat.
