The story in this book is set in 1960s Poland and was banned in that country at the time of publication. A former officer of the "people’s militia" and a party apparatchik, [the main character] eventually finds himself in a mental hospital, persecuted by the Kafkaesque nightmare of being constantly spied upon by secret agents. Once an autocratic and suspicious administrator himself, he can be regarded as a victim of his own standards, but his naive faith in the party, which has survived all ups and downs, shifts responsibility mostly upon the system and its destructive potential. --what-when-how.com.

Ciemności kryją ziemię – powieść Jerzego Andrzejewskiego, napisana w latach 1955–1957, opublikowana w 1957 roku. Andrzejewski wydał ją po dłuższym okresie niemocy twórczej. Przyczyną tego było m.in. to, że Andrzejewski w okresie stalinizmu był jednym z najaktywniejszych pisarzy wiernych ustrojowi. Aby ukryć prawdziwy cel napisania Ciemności.., pisarz umieścił akcję powieści w XV-wiecznej Hiszpanii (okres działania Świętej Inkwizycji i słynnego inkwizytora Tomása de Torquemady) i wystylizował ją na kronikę historyczną z tego okresu. Jedna ze starych hiszpańskich kronik notuje, że w połowie września roku tysiąc czterysta osiemdziesiątego piątego, późnym popołudniem, do miasteczka Villa-Réal w Manczy przybył czcigodny ojciec Wielki Inkwizytor w otoczeniu dwustu kilkudziesięciu konnych i pieszych familiantów, czyli domowników Świętej Inkwizycji, zwanych również Milicją Chrystusową. Ulice Villa-Réal — dodaje skrupulatny kronikarz — były puste, zniknęły z nich stragany żydowskich przekupniów, z oberż i z winiarni nie dochodził gwar, a okna większości mieszkalnych domów przysłaniały żaluzje. Upał, silny za dnia, zelżał już cokolwiek, jednak od Sierra Morena wciąż wiał suchy i gorący, południowy wiatr.

The Gates of Paradise

At the height of the Nazi extermination campaign in the Warsaw Ghetto, a young Jewish woman, Irena, seeks the protection of her former lover, a young architect, Jan Malecki. By taking her in, he puts his own life and the safety of his family at risk. Over a four-day period, Tuesday through Friday of Holy Week 1943, as Irena becomes increasingly traumatized by her situation, Malecki questions his decision to shelter Irena in the apartment where Malecki, his pregnant wife, and his younger brother reside. Added to his dilemma is the broader context of Poles’ attitudes toward the “Jewish question” and the plight of the Jews locked in the ghetto during the final moments of its existence. Few fictional works dealing with the war have been written so close in time to the events that inspired them. No other Polish novel treats the range of Polish attitudes toward the Jews with such unflinching honesty. Jerzy Andrzejewski's Holy Week (Wielki Tydzien, 1945), one of the significant literary works to be published immediately following the Second World War, now appears in English for the first time. This translation of Andrzejewski’s Holy Week began as a group project in an advanced Polish language course at the University of Pittsburgh. Class members Daniel M. Pennell, Anna M. Poukish, and Matthew J. Russin contributed to the translation; the instructor, Oscar E. Swan, was responsible for the overall accuracy and stylistic unity of the translation as well as for the biographical and critical notes and essays.
