Harmonies Of The World

Somnium is a Latin word for Dream. This novel was written by Johannes Kepler in 1608, in a time when a trip to the ethereal regions of the moon would be possible only with the assistance of supernatural forces. Historians consider this lunar exploration a remarkable and revolutionary text, and one of the most provocative and innovative of Kepler's works. Great authors/scientists such as Isaac Asimov and Carl Sagan suggested it as the first science fiction story. If it is not, we can at least consider it as the first serious scientific work about lunar astronomy.

Johannes Kepler: Life and Letters was written as a biography of Johannes Kepler using his own letters. The letters extend over a period of time from 1596 to 1631 bringing to the reader Keplers' personality rather than his scientific achievements. The book represents his youth and years of apprenticeship, marriage and First scholarly achievements, the imperial mathematics at the Court in Prague, the Difficult Years in Linz and the Oddessy of the last four years incompassing 1948 to 1951.

In seinen letzten Lebensjahren ergänzte er sie um einen umfangreichen astronomisch-mathematischen Anmerkungsteil, erst nach seinem Tod konnte diese Schrift veröffentlicht werden. Von zeitgenössischen Astronomen als "bizarr" und "seltsam" abgelehnt, steckt in ihr mehr als eine mutige Verteidigung des kopernikanischen Weltbilds. Zum ersten Mal erscheint nun diese Traumerzählung voll blühender Phantasie in einer textkritischen Übersetzung nach der Originalausgabe von 1634 vollständig auf Deutsch mit einem Essay von Beatrix Langner, in dem sie die Träumereien dieses äußerst ungewöhnlichen Mathematikers, Astronoms und Denkers des deutschen Humanismus vor dem Hintergrund der religions- und naturphilosophischen Debatten seiner Zeit nachzeichnet und deren Spur bis heute verfolgt.
