Joseph G Vella
About
Dr Joseph G Vella has been teaching computing for the past thirty years mainly in database technology, data science and application development and during this period he developed and introduced a number of teaching units. A number of under and postgraduate students have been supervised for their thesis requirements.
Dr Vella’s main research interest is in database data and query modelling. Areas of previous projects include aspects of highly scalable, available and massive data repositories.
Dr Vella is responsible for the development of scientific databases and the integration of data from various sources. A prominent example is the spatial database that encodes marine biodiversity data on marine species – e.g. cetaceans, turtles and pelagic species. A more recent project is the building a data infrastructure for marine acoustic noise monitoring through streaming data collection from field stations and on-line data sources.
A number of consultancies have been undertaken with industry partners. These varied from tutoring, aiding software development teams, and creating systems to meet their requirements. One example is developing a system to meet Malta's requirements with EU’s EuroSTAT in terms of sea borne goods and passengers (EU Directive 1995/64 & 2009/42). The system accepts coded data coming from the Maltese shipping agents' data sources, collates and then publishes quarterly and annual data.
