"Since the early 1970s, Marina Abramovic (b. 1946) has pioneered the use of performance as a visual art form, exploring her physical and emotional limits in some of the most iconic works in contemporary art. Her body is her primary subject and medium, and she has withstood pain, exhaustion, and danger in her ongoing quest for emotional and spiritual transformation. Since the beginning of her career in Belgrade in the late 1960s, Marina Abramovic has been a pioneer of performance art, creating some of the most important works in the field. Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present accompanies an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art that documents approximately fifty of the artist's ephemeral, time- and media-based works from throughout her career. The book will also discuss a unique element of the Museum's retrospective, live performance: a new work created for the occasion, and performed by the artist herself; and recreations of Abramovic's works by other performers - the first such to be undertaken in a museum setting. The book spans over four decades of Abramovic's early interventions, and sound pieces, video works, installations, photographs, solo performances and collaborative performances made with the Dutch artist Ulay (Uwe Laysiepen). Its essays examine Abramovic's ideas of time, duration, and the reperformance of performance art as a way to extend it into posterity. Marina Abramovic also includes a CD, an audio recording of the artist's own voice, guiding the reader through the publication. The artist is present not only in the exhibition but also in the experience of the book.

In early 2007, Doug Aitken's work New Day Now will be projected onto seven facades on and around the MoMA building. This publication serves as both a document and an extension of the project. Designed by Aitken's studio and featuring critical texts by Klaus Biesenbach and Peter Eleey, the book examines Aitken's dramatic combinations of structural and narrative devices as well as additional behind-the-scenes material about his creative process.

Yoko Ono: One Woman Show, 19601971 examines the beginnings of Onos extensive career, demonstrating her pioneering role in visual art, performance and music during the 1960s and early 1970s. The exhibition begins in New York in December 1960, where Ono initiated a performance series with La Monte Young in her Chambers Street loft. Over the course of the decade, Ono earned international recognition, staging Cut Piece in Tokyo and Kyoto in 1964, exhibiting at the Indica Gallery in London in 1966, and launching her global War is Over! campaign in 1969. Ono returned to New York in the early 1970s and organized an unsanctioned one woman show at The Museum of Modern Art. Over forty years after Onos unofficial MoMA debut, the Museum will present its first exhibition dedicated exclusively to the artists work. The publication evaluates the broader cultural context of Onos early work and features five sections reflecting her geographic locations during this period and the corresponding evolution of her artistic practice. Each chapter includes an introduction written by a guest scholar, artwork descriptions, new interviews with key figures from the time, and a selection of primary documents culled from newspapers, magazines and journals.

'Destroy, She Said' was the title of the first exhibition in the Julia Stoschek Collection, the opening of which prompted a great deal of media coverage last summer in Düsseldorf. One of the show's distinctive features was that the exhibition spaces were made to measure for a total of forty artistic positions by the Berlin architects Kühn Malvezzi, thus demonstrating the potential for the presentation of contemporary media-supported art. This volume documents the exhibition and its remarkable architectural concept. All of the works - by artists such as Doug Aitken, Paul Chan, Robert Smithson, Monica Bonvicini, Natasha Sadr Hagidhian, Dara Birnbaum, Klara Liden, and Olafur Eliasson - are presented in texts and illustrations and situated in the larger context of this exquisite private collection. The book is completed by Daniel Birnbaum's essay on current time-based art and crucial aspects of selected works from the Julia Stoschek Collection as well as by Kaye Geipel's text dealing with the history and architecture of the century-old industrial building--Publisher's website.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Alfred Döblin's novel Berlin Alexanderplatz, published in 1929, takes place in a world of pimps and small-time criminals in the pre-War years. It was the key literary experience for Fassbinder when he read it at the tender age of 14. When, 20 years later, a major German TV station commissioned him to film this Expressionist classic, what he produced was less a filming of a book in the usual sense (which was also hardly to be expected of the enfant terrible of New German Film), but instead a kind of vivisection of two histories, his own and that of Germany, both at times of identity crises. The artistic qualities of the series by no means received the appreciation they should have. The film was simply too dark for the usual TV sets back then, and the few copies available on tape soon faded. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the death of Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945-1982), the Foundation named after him is now presenting a new version of his Berliner Alexanderplatz, restored with great technical effort. Its premiere at the 2007 Berlin Film Festival caused a great stir - and was the definitive proof of Fassbinder's genius and visual impact. The book accompanying the restored film version documents all the details of Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz with 560 pages of color film stills, the complete script, Fassbinder's own thoughts on Döblin's novel and analytical essays by Susan Sontag and editor Klaus Biesenbaeh.
