A personal account of an Iraqi childhood Poppies of Iraq is Brigitte Findakly’s nuanced tender chronicle of her relationship with her homeland Iraq, co-written and drawn by her husband, the acclaimed cartoonist Lewis Trondheim. In spare and elegant detail, they share memories of her middle class childhood touching on cultural practices, the education system, Saddam Hussein’s state control, and her family’s history as Orthodox Christians in the arab world. Poppies of Iraq is intimate and wide-ranging; the story of how one can become separated from one’s homeland and still feel intimately connected yet ultimately estranged. Signs of an oppressive regime permeate a seemingly normal life: magazines arrive edited by customs; the color red is banned after the execution of General Kassim; Baathist militiamen are publicly hanged and school kids are bussed past them to bear witness. As conditions in Mosul worsen over her childhood, Brigitte’s father is always hopeful that life in Iraq will return to being secular and prosperous. The family eventually feels compelled to move to Paris, however, where Brigitte finds herself not quite belonging to either culture. Trondheim brings to life Findakly’s memories to create a poignant family portrait that covers loss, tragedy, love, and the loneliness of exile.

Lapinot revient ! Lapinot revient à la vie ! Lapinot revient à l'Asso ! Ses formidables aventures se sont poursuivies dans tous les registres, tous les univers et toutes les époques, entouré de son inséparable bande de copains. Puis, le drame. Lapinot, personnage de bande dessinée mortel, s'est trouvé emporté par un accident de la route au grand désespoir de ses lecteurs. On retrouve Lapinot tranquillement installé sur un banc en compagnie de Richard et la question de sa mort est évincée à la rigolade en deux coups de cuillère à pot. Lewis Trondheim ne s'étendra pas sur le retour à la vie de son personnage fétiche, Lapinot porte comme seul stigmate de sa mort passée - à laquelle finalement on ne peut plus croire - un t-shirt noir orné d'une tête de mort. Comme souvent pour Lapinot, c'est le hasard d'une rencontre anodine qui est le point de départ d'une grande aventure et les tracasseries du quotidien finissent par l'embarquer dans des intrigues aussi drôles que rocambolesques. Cette fois l'exubérance de Richard l'amène à faire la rencontre de Gaspard, un étrange personnage qui a le don de voir l'aura des autres et de percevoir leurs émanations psychiques : il est tout de suite frappé par la gentillesse de Lapinot et il sollicite son aide... Dans cette nouvelle aventure qui nous promet Un monde un peu meilleur, on suit Lewis Trondheim les yeux fermés et c'est bien là tout le plaisir du lecteur que de toujours se laisser prendre aux facéties de cet auteur malicieux qui s'amuse à vous regarder lire autant qu'il s'amuse lui-même à raconter.

Un monde un peu meilleur

Il pleut encore sur les rues de Londres, et dans le portefeuille d'enquêtes de Maggy Garrisson, détective privée inventive et malicieuse, on trouve de surprenantes énigmes du quotidien : vols de dents en or sur les cadavres d'un crématorium, petits larcins dans la caisse d'une librairie, un album de photos à rendre à une famille... Rien d'insoluble pour la flegmatique jeune femme qui a bien besoin d'argent. Et pour plus d'action, elle pourra toujours compter sur son récent petit ami, petit malfrat au grand coeur... Loin des clichés du genre, Maggy Garrisson est une série policière contemporaine à l'ambiance toute british. Avec ce troisième tome, Lewis Trondheim et Stéphane Oiry livrent la fin du premier cycle d'un polar réaliste et pince-sans-rire. Un scénario à multiples facettes, des personnages attachants, un graphisme noir, les raisons ne manquent pas pour rejoindre Maggy au pub du coin !

Maggy Garrisson - Tome 3 - Je ne voulais pas que ça finisse comme ça

Après l'épisode de la plage de Brighton, Maggy attend que ça se tasse. Elle a de quoi patienter : un nouveau mec, un joli magot de 15 000 livres qui attend son heure, et même une nouvelle enquête pour gagner un peu d'argent frais. Le principal, c'est de ne pas donner prise aux possibles soupçons de Sheena qui, tout flic ripou qu'elle est, n'en reste pas moins flic... avec une revanche à prendre. Une nouvelle étape dans le quotidien de Maggy Garrisson, dont la vie n'est pas exactement un roman mais bien plutôt un polar, avec ses dialogues bien serrés, ses hasards qui n'en sont pas forcément et ses pintes sans faux col au pub du coin. Accompagné de Stéphane Oiry au dessin, Lewis Trondheim confirme la très bonne surprise avec ce tome 2 sans concession et blindé d'un humour qui n'est pas chargé à blanc.
