This collection critically examines "tolerance," "secularism," and respect for religious "diversity" within a social and political system dominated by Sufi brotherhoods. Through a detailed analysis of Senegal's political economy, essays trace the genealogy and dynamic exchange among these concepts while investigating public spaces and political processes and their reciprocal engagement with the state, Sunni reformist and radical groups, and non-religious organizations. The anthology provides a rich and nuanced historical ethnography of the formation of Senegalese democracy, illuminating the complex trajectory of the Senegalese state and reflecting on similar postcolonial societies. Offering rare perspectives on the country's "successes" since liberation, the volume identifies the role of religion, gender, culture, ethnicity, globalization, politics, and migration in the reconfiguration of the state and society, and it makes an important contribution to democratization theory, Islamic studies, and African studies.

As a first step towards greater consideration of the nature of the research environment in Africa and to reflect on the social and material context of research as an intellectual activity, CODESRIA co-organised a major conference on academic freedom and research in Africa in Kampala in 1990. A selection of the conferencepapers are contained in this volume. The papers cover the relationship of capital and the state to academic freedom, the historical processes which have shaped intellectuals in Africa, issue of autonomy and democracy andthe question of funding relationships, and the difficulty of alliances that question the right to independence. Ce recueil vise à porter à la connaissance de lecteurs francophones, notamment africains, le riche patrimoine des historiens indiens regroupés depuis vingt ans au sein du Groupe d'étude sur les subalternes dont la revue Subaltern Studies a connu neuf livraisons depuis 1981. L'expression de subalterne (ou subordonné) est empruntée à Antonio Gramsci et renvoie aussi bien à la notion de pouvoir aux plans idéologiques et culturels qu'à la paysannerie. L'historien sénégalais Mamadou Diouf, responsable du choix des contributions, explique longuement dans son introduction le sens et les évolutions de ces recherches qui veulent mettre en lumière l'autonomie de la conscience subalterne en produisant une historiographie libérée de la volonté des élites nationaliste et coloniale. Il s'agit de déchirer les voiles du pouvoir qui ont enseveli les résistances paysannes sous la rhétorique de la codification coloniale. Cette démarche est complétée par le recours à la poésie, à la peinture, à la littérature, aux arts et au cinéma. Une seule grande question traverse la dizaine de textes de ces historiens indiens : quels sont les modèles historiographiques dont disposent les pays nouvellement indépendants ? (" Qui parle au nom du passé indien ? Les subalternes peuvent-ils s'exprimer ? "). Ces réflexions sur l'écriture de l'histoire en situations post-coloniales sont complétées par des études de fragments, autrement dit des études de cas, notamment sur les affrontements entre hindous et musulmans ou sur les femmes dans la nation. Cette sortie de la " bibliothèque coloniale " concerne directement l'historiographie africaine. Le caractère totalement inédit de ces travaux et la perspective comparatiste qu'ils soulèvent devraient concerner tous ceux qui s'interrogent sur le passé mais aussi l'avenir des nations africaines.
