La storia è nota: il 3 ottobre 1935 l’Italia – ansiosa di conquistare un posto al sole fra le potenze coloniali – invase l’Etiopia; sette mesi dopo Mussolini annunciò il ritorno dell’Impero «sui colli fatali di Roma». Fu una guerra nazionale, combattuta da mezzo milione di italiani ansiosi di riscattare il prestigio compromesso dall’Italietta pre-fascista, umiliata dalla «vittoria mutilata»; una guerra moderna, col massiccio uso di mezzi meccanici e aviazione; una guerra criminale, con l’impiego sistematico dei gas nelle fasi più delicate.
