Sous le titre "Destinée arbitraire" qui est emprunté au premier poème de l'un des trois recueils contenus dans ce volume, les poèmes ont été répartis en trois sections qui correspondent à trois tranches chronologiques distinctes ; d'abord les poèmes de 1919-1926 ; la seconde section regroupe des textes écrits entre 1930 et 1939 ; la troisième section correspond aux années 1943-1944.

Destinée arbitraire

A finales de la década de los años veinte se encontró en el barrio parisino de Saint-Denis el cadáver, brutalmente despedazado, de una mujer. El crimen, y su estremecedor parecido con los cometidos años antes por Jack “el destripador”, despertaron la curiosidad del poeta y periodista Robert Desnos, que decidió investigar a su vez la historia de aquel legendario asesino del Londres victoriano. En última instancia, Desnos quería demostrar que los procedimientos de los criminales sádicos no habían cambiado desde “el destripador” y para ello estudió, con las dotes de un monstruo mitad forense y mitad literato, los detalles y las variaciones de cada uno de aquellos homicidios. Este trabajo vio la luz a través de una serie de nueve artículos periodísticos sobre Jack “el Destripador” publicados en Paris-Matinal entre los meses de enero y febrero de 1928, y que ahora por primera vez se traducen al castellano. En todos ellos, tanto el ambiente del Londres de la época como los pormenores de los crímenes son descritos de forma magnífica y reveladora. Además, Desnos propone a sus lectores a lo largo de esta serie una suerte de intriga paralela que va hilándose de un texto a otro y que avanza, finalmente, una suerte hipótesis sobre la verdadera identidad de este asesino que nunca fue juzgado...

El destripador

"In those days, my door was open to mystery." So speaks the hero of Desnos' novel: Sanglot the Corsair. Mystery, the marvellous, a city transmuted by love, Sanglot's pursuit of the siren Louise Lame, such are the essential ingredients of this the last masterpiece of early Surrealism to remain untranslated into English. It was originally published in 1924 to immediate and lasting acclaim - except from the public authorities who immediately censored whole sections (here restored).
Impossible to describe a novel of such virtuosity and bravura, and one which consistently refuses to behave as one expects, characters appear and vanish according to whim or desire, they walk underwater, nonchalantly accept astounding coincidences. It's a hymn to the erotic, an adventure story darkly illumined by the shades of Sade, Lautreamont and Jack the Ripper, a dream both violent and tender, an obsession, in fact the perfect embodiment of the Surrealist spirit: at once joyful, despairing, and effortlessly scandalous.

A Liberdade ou o Amor

Written in 1927 at the height of his involvement with the Surrealists, this is Desnos' most famous work and one of the key texts of the movement.

A startlingly contemporary portrait of drug addiction in prewar Paris Published in 1943 (just a year before its author was arrested by the Gestapo for his Resistance activities), The Die Is Castwas a departure for Robert Desnos: a shift from his earlier, frenetic Surrealist prose to a social realism that borrowed as much from his life experience as his career as a journalist. Drawing on his own use of drugs in the 1920s and his doomed relationship with the chanteuse Yvonne George, Desnos here portrays a band of opium, cocaine and heroin users from all walks of life in Paris. It is a startlingly contemporary portrayal of overdoses, arrests, suicides and the flattened solitude of the addict, yet published in occupied Paris, years before "junkie literature" established itself with the Beat Generation. An anomaly both in his career and for having been published under the Occupation by an active member of the Resistance, The Die Is Castnow stands as timely a piece of work as it had been untimely when it first appeared. Robert Desnos(1900-45) was Surrealism's most accomplished practitioner of automatic writing and dictation before his break with André Breton in 1929. His career in journalism and radio culminated in an active role in the French Resistance. Desnos was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944, and passed through several concentration camps until finally dying of typhoid in Terezín in 1945, a few days after the camp he was in was liberated.

Que o leitor prove desses frutos sem se preocupar, pois não se trata aqui de lutar com monstros, ou se deixar seduzir por eles, mas do ato mais inegavelmente humano: buscar sentido nas coisas, mesmo em uma carnificina, transformando a informação fria e a especulação sensacionalista dos jornais em arte literária.
