This study of Hamlet begins with an examination of the play's use of real space and time as elements of a narration that is, in part, about a protagonist's perception of space and time. Robert E. Wood shows that distortions in Hamlet's perceptions of space and time accompany his disillusionment with cultural values. In the next phase of the book, Wood examines how wit and soliloquy are used in the protagonist's interrogation of language. In the third phase of the book, Wood examines expectations we bring to the theater: our focus on the body as the locus of our attention; and our understanding of the generic framework which orders our experience. Wood finds in Hamlet a series of violations of generic expectation that opens up the narrow range of revenge tragedy to the fuller scope of tragedy proper. Because Hamlet problematizes genre, we become aware of the problems generated when mythic narrative is infused with self-conscious dramatic characters. The resulting ambivalence of the generic framework makes possible the play's generalized challenge to institutions of social order.

Personality can be understood from at least two perspectives. One focuses on stable, between-person differences, or traits. The other perspective focuses on within-person differences and dynamics, i.e., fluctuations in personality in response to situations and across time. This Research Topic reflects recent developments in personality research to integrate both trait and dynamic perspectives. An integrated view on personality recognizes both stability in between-person differences and within-person change. Contributors are drawn from research teams across Europe, North America and Australasia, and from basic and applied fields, including organizational, educational, and clinical. The studies reported provide new evidence in support of an integrative approach, highlight currently active areas of research and propose new directions of research. Current streams of research include the study of contingent units of personality and within-person processes underlying traits, the comparisons of findings based on within- vs. between-person data, the conceptualisation and operationalization of perceived and objective change in situation variables, the malleability of personality and the potential for personality interventions. Integrative approaches using within-person designs provide new, bottom-up insights into general principles of personality that explain differences between people while reflecting the complexities of within-person personality dynamics at the level of the individual.

A Theory of Goal Setting & Task Performance

Robert Wood’s aim in Being and the Cosmos\i is to reestablish a speculative view of the cosmos that goes back to the ancient Greeks and that corresponds to the holism of contemporary physics. There are two sets of problems in contemporary thought that militate against any such attempt. Most widespread is scientific reductionism in biology and neuroscience that explains awareness in terms of the mechanisms that underlie it. The second is the widespread attack in philosophy itself on speculative holism by deconstruction and anti-foundationalism. In Being and the Cosmos\i, the tack against both is to make explicit the character of the mind that sees and thinks, that actively takes up commitment to the truth available in the disciplines involved. The basic ground of this position rests upon the functioning of the notion of Being that opens up the question of the character of the Whole and the human being’s place in it. Thus position the treatment of the notion of Being as foundation and as orientation toward the Whole between the attack on reductionism and on deconstruction and anti-foundationalism. Wood concludes with a multidimensional sketch of an evolutionary view of the cosmos whose initial phases contain the potentialities for life, sensibility, and intellect as cosmic telos. The holism of contemporary physics has to be reconfigured in terms of this observation. Both reductionists and dualists should know that matter itself has to be re-minded and that mind itself matters.
