Als het autistische meisje Karen door haar tante wordt gevonden in het huis van haar familie in Mexico, is ze verwilderd en verwaarloosd. Het tienjarige kind blijkt nog nauwelijks met mensen contact te hebben gehad, en kan niet communiceren of überhaupt spreken. De beginselen van het bestaan als mens moet zij nog leren, een uitdaging die haar tante die het huis, een tonijnvisserij, en onverwachts ook het kind heeft geërfd met de volste overtuiging op zich neemt. Zeedieren zijn stille wezens is een roman over een bijzonder meisje dat ontdekt dat zij op de oceaanbodem bij de tonijn die haar familie bevist, meer rust en vrede vindt dan in de omgang met mensen.
