J'étais persuadé à l'avance de retrouver le même univers que lors de mon premier séjour à Saint-Paul. J'allais pénétrer sur un campus peuplé de gosses de riches, et observer que les quelques élèves noirs et latinos pauvres y étaient tenus à l'écart dans une résidence réservée. j'allais constater que les élèves qui à leur arrivée ici savaient déjà qu'ils étaient les élites de demain bénéficiaient d'avantages sociaux et culturels par rapport aux autres. Mais j'ai réalisé que l'endroit avait bien changé. L'arrogance des nantis avait laissé la place à l'aisance, qui est ta marque du privilège. Ce livre en forme d'immersion dans l'univers d'une élite en devenir permet de mieux comprendre le problème des inégalités dans une Méritocratie. Ethnographie de Saint-Paul, lycée d'élite américain par lequel sont passées nombre de figures de premier plan du monde politique et administratif actuel, ce livre remet en cause de nombreux préjugés sur le fonctionnement des élites d'aujourd'hui. L'auteur, d'origine pakistanaise et issu d'un milieu comparativement modeste, a lui-même étudié à Saint-Paul avant de revenir y enseigner dans le but d'y mener cette enquête. Mesurant les changements réels qu'a connus ce pensionnat (où, voilà trente ans, les élèves dits "de couleur" dormaient dans des dortoirs à part), il montre comment, au-delà de la revendication d'une distinction fondée sur la maîtrise de la culture WASP, l'aristocratisme américain proclame désormais son ouverture d'esprit envers les minorités : une forme de cosmopolitisme au service du maintien des inégalités sociales.

Approaches to Ethnography illustrates the various modes of representation and analysis that typify participant observation research. In contrast to the multitude of ethnographic textbooks, handbooks, and readers on the market, this book is neither a "how-to" guide nor a catalogue of substantive themes such as race, community, or space; it also avoids re-hashing epistemological debates, such as grounded theory versus the extended case method. Instead, this volume concisely lays out the predominant analytic lenses that ethnographers use to explain social action--for instance, whether they privilege micro-interaction or social structure, people and places or social processes, internal dispositions or situational contingencies. Each chapter features a prominent ethnographer delineating a distinct approach to the study of everyday life and reflecting on how their approach shapes the way they analyze and represent the field. Taken together, the collection is a practical guide that spells out how different styles of ethnography illuminate different dimensions of everyday social life. Identifying parallels between police and military power, contributors argue that policing is more than merely the practice of the institution of the police but is the violence work of maintaining a specific social order.
