The Sepher Bahir is one of the foremost works of all mystic Judaism, an important work of Kabbalah in which commentaries on sounds, words, and stories are presented in a somewhat choppy form (for it was a compiled manuscript, not a primordial single work.) The work is ascribed to a mystic rabbi named Nehunya circa the first century. It refers as well to another mystic work- the famous Sepher Yetzirah, equally as renowned for its spiritual lore.

The Arbatel of Magick is one of a number of early grimoires focusing primarily on white magic and the philosophical side of the occult. Well known despite its relatively short length, it is broken into a series of aphorisms which contain various spiritual knowledge. King Solomon

One of the lengthier grimoires of the medieval period, the Ars Notoria, commonly referred to as the Notary Art of Solomon, promises the reader a series of orations, prayers, and invocations, which may be used to secure the favor of the christian god, enhancing the memory, eloquence, and general academic capability of the one performing such rituals. Originally its own text, based on even older sources not yet fully documented, this text is commonly wrapped up into the Lesser Keys of Solomon along with such works as the Ars Goetia- some editions of the latter omit this work. Prayers contained herein invoke not just the god of christianity, but Jesus Christ and various angelic powers as well.

The Ars Goetia is one of the most notorious works of ritual occultism ever created. Originally part of a loose literary history dating to the 17th century, it was compiled with other material by Samuel MacGregor Mathers in 1904, forming the infamous "Lesser Keys of Solomon" or Lemegeton. Containing a list of seventy two demons, their seals, and the method by which they can be summoned by the Master, this book (for it is its own book) contains a fair mix of the bizarre along with its demonology, with grotesque descriptions of otherworldly beings constrained by King Solomon himself; those selfsame fiendish devils which, by his power, built the Temple of Jerusalem itself.

Ars Goetia

When the word "grimoire" is mentioned, the Petit Albert is perhaps the single most notorious book which comes to mind. Originally compiled in the 18th century, it brings together folk magick, talismanic sorcery, ritual and herbal medicine, and a bit of the diabolical, going well beyond the ritual styles of most contemporary writings. Originally in French, and drawing from the prior work of Paracelsus and Agrippa among others, this collection of operations extends far beyond its native land into the world at large; the first cosmopolitan grimoire of the pre-modern era. More diabolical than the Red Dragon and more in depth than the Black Pullet with regards to talismanic art, the Petit Albert is certainly a force to behold within the realm of occult literature.

The third book of the Lemegeton, one of the works compiled into the infamous Keys of Solomon, is the Ars Paulina. As a list of seals combined with astrological lore, it is a bit dense, but easily understood with an astrology guide. As one of the actual, authentic Solomonic works of the same era as the Ars Goetia, it is seldom presented alone despite being its own technically separate occult work.

The Testament of Solomon has stood the test of time and remained one of the seminole occult works of antiquity. Far predating the Lesser Keys and associated works, it dates to between the first and fifth centuries, seemingly basing part of its content on proto-judaean lore and Greek works as well. It contains, as well, an allusion to the concept, simply, "As above, so below"- one of the earlier references to such, if the earlier dating is true. It describes a host of demons encountered by King Solomon during his time spent enslaving the same, for the purposes of the building of the temple at Jerusalem. Attendant to him in his wisdom, the "Queen of the South" (presumably Egyptian) and the land of Arabia, entreating his wisdom and power to rid them of demonic forces. To any who wish to practice later works involving these same demonic entities or associated forces (such as with the Lesser Keys) this remains one of the more valuable pieces of source material; far older and potentially closer to the original story.

The Testament of Solomon

The Red Dragon has been variously treated as a grimoire, a piece of folk literature, and a joke manuscript; it comprises one part of what is loosely termed "The Grand Grimoire"- a collection of magickal works from the Renaissance such as the Black Pullet and Lesser Keys of Solomon. The Red Dragon however bears the title "Grand Grimoire" on its own. Multiple editions of it exist, some with material tacked on. It takes the form of a long ritualistic ceremony designed to secure communication with a demon known as "Lucifuge Rofocale" followed by various invocations and incantations and spells. The contents are heretical in the extreme, from rituals involving boiling a black cat to the use of toxic substances in ritual form. Small wonder, that this text has gained so much notoreity.

The Grand Grimoire

The Sepher Yetzirah is one of the main and most important works of Kabbalah. Referenced by other works such as the Bahir, it is broken apart into a series of statements on the Hebrew alphabet and numeric systems. Among other concepts it expounds the concept of creation via the three mothers; Alef, Mem, and Shin, and their relative powers. It is one of the most integral works from which such types of occultism stem.

Sepher Yetzirah

Although it is often erroneously conflated with Renaissance era texts, the Grimorium Verum remains one of the most notorious books of magick ever written by man. Dating to the 18th century, its content has been both condemned and applauded for the power it holds. From astrological lore to folk magick, this work off dubious origin is one of the most diabolical works within the occult, and a must-read for all dark mages. 60 pages. Fully illustrated.
