«Scrivevo poesie serie, tragiche» ha detto nel 1991 Zbigniew Herbert in un'intervista, paradossalmente deplorando l'abolizione della censura seguita alla caduta del Muro. «Adesso scrivo sul mio corpo, sulla malattia, sulla perdita del pudore». In questa nuova atmosfera lirica, infatti, il poeta i cui versi Iosif Brodskij aveva definito come «una nitida figura geometrica ... incuneata a forza nella gelatina della mia materia cerebrale» (versi, aggiungeva, che il lettore si ritrova «marchiati a fuoco nella mente con la loro glaciale lucidità») – ebbene, quello stesso poeta che era stato così discreto, così poco incline a parlare di sé, lascia spazio alle confessioni intime di un io che abita ormai «sull'orlo del nulla» e ci consegna una sorta di testamento spirituale. Rimane, certo, il suo tono, quella «miscela di ironia, disperazione ed equilibrio» che già incantava Brodskij; e rimangono i temi che sempre sono stati al centro della sua ricerca espressiva: la memoria come vicinanza al passato e alla tradizione, l'azione corrosiva del tempo, il viaggio come fonte di ispirazione: ma accanto a questi c'è ora la stoica accettazione della sofferenza fisica e psicologica, accompagnata dalla gratitudine (così si legge nelle estreme composizioni di «Breviario») per tutta «questa cianfrusaglia della vita» (e soprattutto, scrive, «per le pasticche di sonnifero dai melodiosi nomi di ninfe romane») – una vita che si lascia, tuttavia, con il «cuore pieno di rimpianto».
