In a story about hair in unexpired places the doctor is named Murkin??? I see you, Stine. 

This was a pretty repetitive story, and the logic doesn’t always line up (why is it a baby at the end? What happens as they age?), but I love it when Stine tries to make characters cool.

On a lark, I decided to reread and review all the original Goosebumps from my youth. It was a fun exercise, but I moved on after around 25 novels (and I think I still owe a few reviews from that set as well...). Since it's October and Halloween time coming up, I thought it would be a good chance to pick up my Goosebumps challenge again, and I started with My Hairest Adventure.

The title of this book didn't inspire hopeful thoughts in my, but I was pleasantly surprised that this was actually a pretty solid Goosebumps book. The main character, Larry, and his friends found an old bottle of Insta-Tan and slathered it on. However, shortly after, Larry starts sprouting rough black hair all over! Terrified of what is happening to him, he tries to keep it secret in order to avoid being made fun of. But then his friends start disappearing one by one, and the hair keeps coming back...

My Hairest Adventure is actually a pretty good book of suspect for the younger reader crowd. Larry's fear over the hair and his strange doctor's appointments suggest that something is definitely happening, but poor Larry has been left out of the loop. The ending where it turns out he and his friends were really dogs all along, turned into children through a strange, inexplicable science experiment is absolutely ridiculous. But it's also a really great bit of existential horror! Sure, I have no idea why a scientist and an entire town would think that turning dogs into kids was a good thing to do, but the thought of such a place gives me a shudder, and the fact that Larry retains some sentience, though is obviously changed is actually really chilling. It was probably supposed to make me laugh, but I think Larry's predicament is one of the most frightening in the Goosebumps line!
