This early work by Arthur Conan Doyle was originally published in 1894 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography as part of our Sherlock Holmes series. Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859. It was between 1876 and 1881, while studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh, that he began writing short stories, and his first piece was published in Chambers's Edinburgh Journal before he was 20. In 1887, Conan Doyle's first significant work, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual. It featured the first appearance of detective Sherlock Holmes, the protagonist who was to eventually make Conan Doyle's reputation. A prolific writer, Conan Doyle continued to produce a range of fictional works over the following years. This Sherlock Holmes story set in the world of horse racing was an alright enough mystery that I enjoyed the read of it, but it didn't leave much of an impression on me after finishing it. Sherlock Holmes does what he does best: finding obscure clues and noticing things others don't, leading to the successful solving of the case. It's a fun, short read, especially for fans of Doyle and as such I'd recommend it to read if you have some time to spare and enjoy puzzling the clue to a mystery before checking whether you were right at the end

Holmes and Watson go to Dartmoor to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a racehorse named Silver Blaze, but that is not the only strange occurrence that has happened there... The day before the race, the horse’s trainer – John Straker – was found dead. "Silver Blaze" is taken from "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes". Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Scotland and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After his studies, he worked as a ship’s surgeon on various boats. During the Second Boer War, he was an army doctor in South Africa. When he came back to the United Kingdom, he opened his own practice and started writing crime books. He is best known for his thrilling stories about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He published four novels and more than 50 short-stories starring the detective and Dr Watson, and they play an important role in the history of crime fiction. Other than the Sherlock Holmes series, Doyle wrote around thirty more books, in genres such as science-fiction, fantasy, historical novels, but also poetry, plays, and non-fiction.
