A Map of Days

Ransom Riggs2018
The instant bestseller! • New York Times bestseller • USA Today bestseller • Wall Street Journal bestseller “A Map of Days reveals Ransom Riggs at the peak of his powers, leaving loyal fans ravenous for more.” –NY Journal of Books Having defeated the monstrous threat that nearly destroyed the peculiar world, Jacob Portman is back where his story began, in Florida. Except now Miss Peregrine, Emma, and their peculiar friends are with him, and doing their best to blend in. But carefree days of beach visits and normalling lessons are soon interrupted by a discovery—a subterranean bunker that belonged to Jacob’s grandfather, Abe. Clues to Abe’s double-life as a peculiar operative start to emerge, secrets long hidden in plain sight. And Jacob begins to learn about the dangerous legacy he has inherited—truths that were part of him long before he walked into Miss Peregrine’s time loop. Now, the stakes are higher than ever as Jacob and his friends are thrust into the untamed landscape of American peculiardom—a world with few ymbrynes, or rules—that none of them understand. New wonders, and dangers, await in this brilliant next chapter for Miss Peregrine’s peculiar children. Their story is again illustrated by haunting vintage photographs, now with the striking addition of full-color images interspersed throughout for this all-new, multi-era American adventure.

This was a small disappointment in that it's mostly just buildup to the last couple chapters where everything happens and we're left with a massive cliffhanger. However, that seems to be Riggs' general writing MO, so it wasn't exactly unexpected. I'm not so bummed out that I won't read the next one though because I will, especially since I thought the series was done after the first three. One thing I WAS super happy about though is that Emma and Jacob broke up, and I really hope it stays that way. I've always thought that relationship was super creepy...I mean, I can see how Jacob would fall in love with his grandfather's ex-girlfriend, but I had a problem with Emma, who is 80 years old no matter what her body may look like at the moment, falling for a 16 year old kid. That's just super uncomfortable to think about. I have a hard time believing that these "children" wouldn't have matured beyond their looped ages given all that they have to go through and all the time on their hands. There are still things going on in their daily lives and relationships to navigate, not to mention some really heavy stuff going on that they were perfectly aware of despite their rewinding of the same day over and over. Anyway, I'm just glad to see that weirdness dissolve, and I'm hoping that maybe Jacob will hook up with Noora, who is much more his mental equal, in the next book.

** spoiler alert ** 100+ pages of domestic peculiarness? Enoch's character development? The change in the relationship between Emma and Jacob? Noor's peculiar ability? Real-life issues fogging up morality? A Map of Days was a brilliant addition to the Peculiar Children series, and it definitely held up the past trilogy's tone. Diving into a peculiar America brought out so much more lore for the series as a whole, and the change in culture was extremely real and interesting to read about. When authors take the time to make things work in terms of linguistics, history, culture, and personal differences, it makes the reading experience so much more enjoyable. Thank you, Ransom!

It was so much fun reading about the kids trying to blend into the world in a time period they’d never been to before. I love this series so much and I can’t wait to read the others in this series.

When I first learned that this series was going to be continued I was aprehensive but BOY WAS I WRONG. A Map of Days has become my favourite in tihs series. I really liked being reunited with our crew again and just being in this world again. I also really liked the fact that this was set in modern time and just loved seeing the peculiars navigate it. My favourite thing about this though, is the American peculiar world. It's interesting and so rich of history. We have only tipped the iceberg in this book and I'm exicted to learn even more about it in the next two books. Speaking of which, I'm really excited for the sequel (why do we know nothing about it yet? It's almost been a year since this book came out). I really like how this book ended up and I'm really excited to see where this is going to go next. I also really liked how the relationship between Emma and Jacob, and just that they finally addressed the big elephant in the room of their relationship. If you loved the original trilogy and wasn't sure yet if you should continue or not I highly recommend that you do because this was just better than the first three. REREAD JUNE 2020 During the first half I was a bit scared this book was going to lose it's 5 star rating as it was a lot of roadtripping and not a lot of action but the last half really made up for it. I really like the expansion of the world in this book. The peculiar world in America is so interesting to me. I really like Jacob in this book. I feel like he grew and matured a lot in this book. I also liked the contrast in Miss Peregrine and the kids, as they've grown up a lot and Miss P still treats them the same as in book one. I just loved spending time with these characters so much. I also liked the direction the relationship between Jacob and Emma took in this series and I hope it won't be backed down upon in the next two books. I also loved learning more about Abe. The last 100 pages of this book were wild and I can't wait to finally read book 5. I'm so glad I decided to reread these books. I just love this world and these characters so much.

I enjoyed this book and I will always love the characters that Ransom Riggs created but this really felt like a money grab to me. This book has set up a whole new series when I really was content with the original trilogy. STOP TRYING TO RUIN GOOD THINGS!!! ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END!!!

real rating: 3.5* I really like this series. I would be okay with original series ending as a trilogy, so i am feel like new books are unnecessary. But once again, this theme is really original and so cool you just cant stop reading the series no matter what. I like some of the characters and since i started this series many years ago it’s a bit nostalgic for me, too. I really love Enoch as a character, he’s so annoying yet cute. Jacob is my least favorite for now, as i feel he’s kind of... flat. This book was definitely fun, so 3.5* is reasonable for a good book that’s not WOOW but you like reading it nonetheless. I feel like this series should end soon or it’s gonna get worse and that would make me sad. But yes, this series is worth reading. It’s so peculiar and fun, with all the beautiful old pictures. Makes your imagination flow.

While I really thought this series wrapped up nicely at 3 books, while unnecessary, this was fun and a start to a new cycle/mystery. I enjoyed the new characters and the intro of the US. Started on the next book immediately as I just needed some candy :)

I'm really enjoying this series and loved how Ransom knit together the past and present for the two main characters. I did see the twist in this story either and that ending tho...cliffhanger! Make sure to have the next book ready! I need the next book now!
