i wanted to love this book, as it was the culmination of one of the best sci fi series i've ever read. it didn't make the cut.

this book is a swamp. there were whole chapters i completely skimmed, read the last paragraph, and didn't miss a thing. 

book one remains one of the best sci fi books ive ever read, filled with PLAUSIBLE and PURPOSEFUL mystery. i don't know what happened, but it read like reynolds was just tired of the universe and wanted to get it over with. 

reminds me of one of the central characters, and leads me to believe that was intentional.

two stars because its book three of one of my favorite sci fi series; minus three stars because i wasted a lot of train rides i could have spent reading better things.
