This book was just okay for me. It dragged a bit in places then other places felt rushed.

The premise seemed like a super cool idea but the execution just lacked a bit for me.

In theory I should absolutely love this book, a gothic mystery romance is exactly my type of book, and when I read the blurb I was so excited to read it. But unfortunately this book really disappointed me. The concept is a really good one, a girl who can't die but can breach the veil between the living and the dead and can speak to Death, uses that to help her solve a mystery involving a dead woman and her dying daughter. I wanted to enjoy this book so much, the prose was well written, the setting was interesting in the beginning plus I was absolutely hooked from the prologue and first chapter but then it quickly became like a chore to finish this book, the setting fell a bit flat, the writing continued to be nice but didn't really have anything that kept my attention. It took me almost two weeks to read and usually with a book that is marketed as thrilling and a romantasy, I would fly through it in a couple of days, but it dragged for me sadly.

Signa Farrow was an interesting FMC - I thought she was ok, but didn't stand out particularly. I think she was quite insecure and cared a lot what people thought about her, even if she often said things brashly without thinking sometimes. It was nice to watch her character arc develop into her accepting her oddness and not giving in to what society demanded of her, but the etiquette handbook that was constantly brought up as if it were her bible was an odd choice. It really held her character back for a lot of the story and while it served to show how her mindset changed throughout the book, I think this could have been shown without referencing it so often. The focus in the storyline kept trying to point back towards Signa's place within society, with many tedious scenes about going to tea, sitting correctly, listening to gossip, coming out for her debut and receiving gentlemen callers, which I'm guessing were meant to build her connection with the side characters and show her discomfort but it just ended up stalling the flow of the story and made the pacing really slow and jarring.

The mystery was also rather basic in my opinion, by the 50% mark I had figured out what was happening and who the murderer was. The author used quite a bit of very obvious foreshadowing and key reactions to certain plot points that, in my opinion, completely gave away the mystery way too early. The one mystery that did keep me on my toes was regarding the stable boy, Sylas Thorly, I couldn't work out who he was and what connection he had to everything, so this part did keep me on my toes - but it wasn't enough to enthral me as much as I hoped. The romance also felt stilted, I did find it a bit creepy that Death kept saying he had waited for so long to be with her after he had first met her as a baby and numerous times as child, it did give off slight groomer vibes. And while Death and Signa did have some good banter and good heart to hearts, the way their relationship progressed from reluctant allies to lovers didn't quite work for me - I didn't really feel their chemistry and thought Signa had better chemistry with Sylas... which makes sense once you've finished the book, but didn't at the time. I also just didn't really develop any connection to the side characters, I wish the book had really delved into her friendships with Blythe and Percy, or really ramped up the tension with her and Charlotte or Eliza just to give the book a bit more oomph.

Overall, I think this was well written for the most part but it didn't work for me personally, for me it seemed like a great idea that was poorly executed and I am really disappointed in that. I could see what Adalyn Grace was trying to do and I can see how easily it could be changed to hit that mark for me, but sadly it just didn't. It needed more depth and connection with the side characters and love interest, and the society subplot needed to be toned down just a bit. I'm not sure if I will continue with the series to be honest, the ending set the second book up to be much the same sort of storyline by the sounds of it, but I will see how I feel...

also the romance… meh sekali… i don’t feel the tension between signa & death. building chemistry-nya terburu-buru, padahal di awal signa gak suka banget sama death kan. it’ll be better kalo chemistry-nya dibangun pelan-pelan biar tension di antara mereka berdua bisa berasa. 

and the revelation that sylas was actually death juga kayak apa deh? i know it’s supposed to be plot-twist, but instead of being shocked, i’m feeling more confused? (idk how to put it into words)

Anyone said gothic, dark academia romance with a deadly twist? Loved the story, the characters, the mistery and the PLOT TWIST (even though I kinda was hoping for it to happen since the beginning).

A delightful read, and a murder mystery that I throughly enjoyed. However, I couldn’t commit to a 4-5 star rating due to some pacing issues (in terms of the romance aspect, the mystery pacing was impeccable) and minor characterisation issues. But this was just in my opinion! Great book to read!

Belladonna was a somewhat spooky, gothic-esque interesting murder mystery! I really liked all of the characters for the most part. And it did a great job of showing day to to day life for Signa and revealing her backstory. The tension was quite good. I found it meandered a little bit and the payoff wasn’t quite what I expected. I guessed a few of the reveals long before they were revealed. But overall I really liked the writing and the vibes of this book. 

As for whether I’d read the next in the series, I’m going to wait to see reviews before I pick it up. I don’t feel like it’s a MUST READ after this one.

What in the Wattpad- grade-level-dialogue- unrefined-manuscript was that? I had high hopes for this, and after only a couple of pages, I knew... And yet I kept on reading (well skimming), and it only got worse. The revelation was so dumb and predictable. The main character is such a wimpering baby, and the love interest is all but enabling her to be just that.

Anyways, I'm in love with this book! This is a YA gothic mystery romance series. Peak gothic ghost vibes!! I loved the romance and murder mystery wrapped up all in this one book. For YA, it's not too spicy, but the tension had me squealing, kicking my feet, and blushing. So well done. Didn't expect this book to make me tear up, but one section in the chapter made cry and I had to take a breather.

I read most of this in physical edition, but I just have to say something about the audiobook! it was amazing and captured me in the story instead of getting distracted. (also Death sounded so good<3

After more thought, I figured I should actually write a whole review of this book. However, for the last few days, my thoughts for the last few days have been, “omg omg omg” and “everyone please read this book.” So, now that I have had the time to put together coherent thoughts, let’s get going. 

Belladonna might be my favorite read of the year so far. Obviously looks aren’t everything, but this book is STUNNING. The writing itself is also pretty stunning. After finishing this, I immediately purchased Grace’s other series, needing more of her writing STAT. 

This is the perfect October read for people like me (read: total babies) because it isn’t too spooky, but it still has the *vibe*. Belladonna has got the goods, too, with some of my favorite tropes like: 

- Enemies to lovers
- Hiding together in a closet

I spent the entire book rooting so hard for Signa. She deserves the entire world. Sylas, Death, and Signa’s cousins are also all great characters. There aren’t any one-sided characters, everyone has depth. Everyone has to make hard decisions, and nearly everyone suffers for their actions at some point in Belladonna. 

Please read this book. I could rave about how much I love it for hours on end. It’s so fun and mystical while also being spooky and thought-provoking at the same time. I definitely have book hangover.

           I really did want to love this. The synopsis was intriguing and the first few chapters had me engaged but the last half of the book really let me down. I was excited for this murder mystery with someone who can literally speak to death and can replicate some of his abilities but some aspects ruined this book for me.

The main thing I found weird concerning the plot was the moments where Signa was learning to 'become a lady' and to 'fit in with society' and so on. It was definetely relevant to the time period but it did make the story feel slightly disjointed and very incoherent considering the main plot line is about a suspected murder.

The second thing is the relationship with Signa and Death. It felt very much like grooming to me since he has been apparently obsessed since she was born and has watched her grown up but has waited since she was of age to make out with her... weird? I think so.

Overall, I enjoyed the first half, not so much the second half (but the plot twist was really good and Signa's abilities are also really cool). World building was great and I did like Grace's wiring style! (This would get a 3 star since I found it pretty average but the Signa/Death relationship weirded me out too much).

The book is quite good and it's super well written, but it has parts that don't quite convince me. It's very slow, and it's only at the end that everything gets tense. I loved how the author writes, however its true that there were parts in which I was bored. 
I was so sure I was going to give this book 4 stars, but it was very predictable and I didn’t like the fact that Percy was the one behind everything… 
The romance was good, but I expected more. Of course, there’s a toxic relationship between the MC and Death (I don’t know why authors LOVE to write about toxic relationships), and the tension between each other is great, but since the very beginning I knew who Death was… 
Again, it was all very predictable but I enjoyed reading this book, it has been on my tbr for so long that I decided to give it a try this month with my beautiful friend Lyra!!! I loved BRing with you🖤

I totally recommend this book, but before reading it, check the trigger warnings: death, grief, murder, suicide attempt, toxic relationship, vomit, etc.

Gave the book 3 stars because the last couple of chapters really started to pick up due to the plot twists. They left me shocked and more invested to continue reading until the end. Honestly, I did not expect Percy to be the villain of the story. I was initially suspicious of him, but nothing he did confirmed my suspicions until the truth started to reveal itself. The way he was unapologetic for his actions had my jaw on the floor. In addition, Adalyn had a way of making me suspicious of so many people. That said, this is a formal apology to Marjorie since I accused her so much for the murders/attempted murders 😅 I also kept convincing myself that Sylas would be the villain for so long, only for my theories to be debunked once again. Maybe I'm slow at piecing things together, but I did not expect Sylas to be Death. I should have known from the grey eyes and his connection to animals, but it was a good plot twist.

However, there were some things I wasn't a big fan of. The first thing was Death calling Signa "Little Bird." Personally, I am not a fan of animal nicknames, so every time he said that I couldn't help but cringe 😭

Regardless, I honestly read the book more for the mystery murder than the romance. I felt more compelled to read when the more eerie scenes took place. Like Lillian's body snapping due to the overload of questions or when the library was set on fire (The poor spirit did not deserve that 💔). The scenes added more to the plot, which made me want to know who was behind the murders even more.

All in all, I enjoyed the read. The small moments of banter were entertaining, and Lillian having closure at the end almost made me cry. I plan to read the second book since I'm curious how Fate will play a part in it after meeting him briefly in the Epilogue 👀

Amazing read! Quick pased, the story takes surprising turns that kept me gripped. Often feeling like I could’ve anticipated it happening, if only I had realised the latest puzzle piece sooner than the main character.

True to its name, this book felt like a poison, slowly killing me as I read through it...and now I'm dead. As with most readers, I'm sure, I was drawn to it by the cover since it was beautiful, and I had high hopes for the book. But ultimately, this book left a bitter taste in my mouth. In the beginning towards the middle part, I was actually quite intrigued by the mystery and Signa's unusual connection with Death and his powers (though, we never got an explanation for this, and I'm unsure if it's something that will be explained in the second or third book because it is unfortunate since I don't have plans on reading them anymore). I couldn't put the book down throughout the most part of the story. I also didn't mind the several twists that came out one after another. The relationship between Death and Signa was...mediocre at best and creepy stalker-ish at worst. But I didn't really care for it. The thing that bothered me the most was the way Signa dealt with Percy. I think that just ruined the whole point of Signa finally finding a family in the Hawthornes because not only did she rob Percy the chance to explain himself to his father and sister and take accountability for his actions, but she also left Elijah, Blythe, and Marjorie not having any closure with him. It wasn't Signa's place to decide whether or not Percy should have died or not. Also, sure, it saved Blythe's life, but I don't think she would have wanted that if her brother died instead. And no, I don't condone Percy's actions, I just thought that death or being absorbed by Death or whatever was the easy way out for him.The ending felt so hollow because of it, and since the conclusion wasn't satisfying, it's as if the build up towards it was pointless. But yeah, I still enjoyed a good chunk of it.

I feel like this author got a prompt to “write a scene where a girl has sex with death” and then built a whole book around it. 

The plot propelled me through it, but the characters and dialogue were underdeveloped throughout. 

I thought it was so obvious that Sylas was Death. And Elijah’s behavior and Percy’s murderous intent just seemed … weak. I didn’t buy it.
