Basada en las vivencias de Emezi, Agua dulce indaga en la experiencia de vivir con un yo fracturado. Ada, la protagonista de esta novela, es una niña nigeriana que por haber nacido «con un pie en el otro lado» acoge en su interior deidades y presencias ancestrales. Al madurar y trasladarse a una universidad de Estados Unidos, ese grupo de yoes gana fuerza y autonomía. A medida que Ada pasa a un segundo plano en su propia mente, su vida comienza a tomar sorprendentes direcciones. Agua dulce es la evocación de una forma insólita de experimentar el mundo, poniendo en diálogo la cosmología igbo con otras formas occidentales de construcción identitaria.
