The years that pass since this was first published and the (vague, time-eroded) knowledge of the film's essentials do not dilute the chills and suspense. The characters are rather pallid but that is to be expected in situational-based science fiction where the plot, world and their strangeness are supposed to be far more interesting than its entrants, but you know enough of them to share their fear and feel something about their deaths. No scene, no thought, no line is wasted in this excellent novelisation, Alan Dean Foster does just enough to trace the shape of dread.
