one thing that I’ve got from this book is that feelings and emotions are the most universal thing in the entirety of space and it’s the one thing that brings us, all of us, regardless of who or what we are, together !!! 

this is among those kinds of book that pushes me to continue to believe in and hope for mankind and all that is out there.

Wow wow wow wow WOW.

I fell in love with The Martian a couple of years ago. First the movie, then the book. I love Weir’s writing style and characters. I love the science, even if I don’t understand most of it. Mostly I love the overarching theme of hope in his books. Humans suck most of the time, but when one of our own is in trouble-or in Project Hail Mary’s case, the entire species-we can work together and we figure it out. We are full of hope. We are hope. 

Dr. Grace and Rocky will now forever be two of my favorite characters. I love them. I love The Martian. I love Project Hail Mary. 

I stayed up to finish this book and it’s 1am now, so I’m going to stop writing and go to sleep before I continue to ramble.

When the book is so good you can’t put it down. Spent two days in the jungle with no signal, which was a great reason to keep reading.

Project Hail Mary is a spectacular example of how with great storytelling, any complex concept can be understood by the audience, whether with their consent or not. Truly a master of the craft, will look forward to reading Mr Weir’s other books.

After been slightly let down by Artemis I wasn't looking forward to this release, but after seeing the hype surrounding it I gave it a try and I'm so glad I did.
Ryland Grace wakes up from a coma with no recollection of who he is or where he is except that he's in space. 
Let's mention the obvious first, Andy Weir has hit definitely a bit of a formula or way of plotting, because you can definitely tell how it follows a similar path (plotwise) as The Martian. That been said, I don't care and this was a glorious reading experience. 
Because similarly to the martian is about a human being stranded somewhere in space and struggling to survive but in ryland's case the future of mankind rests on his shoulders.
This book was heartfelt and I found myself constantly welling up in tears wondering what was going to happen next.

felt like a science lesson disguised as a book and i’m not complaining! the story seemed daunting at first but the light-hearted narration made everything much easier to digest unlike a lot of scifi books. this was genuinely so much fun and wacky and endearing.

I read The Martian some years ago, and liked it a lot, even though the prose annoyed me. When Artemis was published to lukewarm reviews, I skipped it and assumed Andy Weir was a one-trick pony. But then Project Hail Mary came out and got great reviews, so I read it. Turns out he might still be a one-trick pony, but that's not a bad thing!

This novel is structured almost identically to The Martian. The story is told from the casual, informal (and sometimes grating) first-person perspective of an unwilling hero who finds himself alone in a life-threatening situation away from Earth, and has to jerry-rig science and engineering experiments to survive.

Turns out, Andy Weir really masters that structure. The hero is even more unwilling (and has amnesia, recalling his life in bits of pieces through interspersed flashbacks that break up the action). The life-threatening situation is dialed up to an all-life-on-Earth-threatening situation. He's not on Mars, but in another star system.

And it really works! Because he's such an unwilling hero and the situation is more dire (ie. he's not just saving his own skin), there's a redemption arc. The extrasolar setting gives room for a lot of speculative, alien science, instead of just growing potatoes in poop fertilizer on Mars. All great sci-fi stuff that I like, in a plot package that's very exciting.

INCREDIBLE!! The audiobook was such a fun way to experience this book. The narrator was a great choice. I love the incorporation of the alien language!!! 

What a crazy journey. It’s honest about humanity without losing hope. It is VERY science-heavy without being boring. And it’s a fun unique dystopian space novel without feeling pretentious or annoying lol

And the ending does not disappoint though it’s not what I expected!

I didn’t expect this book to make me cry but BOY did it make me CRY.

This story was spectacular! I’ve never read ‘The Martian’ and I remember hearing the praise for that book and it’s use of practical science and theory. I feel this book did the same thing. This story was just so SMART. It talked of concepts I’ve never heard of, but I was still able to follow along just fine. I very clearly did not go to college for science but this book didn’t make me feel dumb, it just brought me along for the ride. The science was FASCINATING. And besides that, the actual storyline was just marvelous. I was cheering on Ryland at every stage. I loved the characters we met along the way (I’m crying again) and how we have two separate timelines that eventually merge into one. The journey we go on of friendship and discovery was just such a joy to read about.

I’ve always been fascinated by aliens and this theory of aliens first coming to us in micro-organisms was, again, just so SMART. Damn. If you’re not super into science or space, I could see this being a less enjoyable reading experience. But I simply had a wonderful time and can’t wait to read more of Andy’s work!

           Thank you Jordan! I have never read a book so fast before holy crap I WAS SO INVESTED. The pacing of this book is fantastic, kind of a difficult read at times due to the science-y terms and processes that were described in great detail but it really reminded me of the science-related courses and activities that I have done in my life to date. Rocky is sooo precious, got me picturing the cutest labrador-sized spider hfkekskw I kind of didn’t like how the mc had a solution to EVERYTHING- it was too convenient, but then again it is a fictional novel so I guess it gives. I kinda did wish Grace went back to Earth though. Great read.

edit: I wish he went back to Earth to give Stratt what she deserved and also i wish he ditched Rocky because that would be soooo juicy. Also Andy Weir cannot write relationships to save his life because wtf was up with the way he introduced the sexual relationship between dubois and the other lady??

Wow. This book gave me everything I could have wanted in a science fiction novel and more. Project Hail Mary has instantly become one of my favorite books.

Premise:
Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, a scientist who wakes up in a spaceship light-years away from Earth, with no memory. He is the last remaining survivor of his crew, and he is Earth's last hope. The story follows Ryland piecing together his past and who he is while navigating this mysterious mission.

Writing & Plot:
This story includes a series of flashbacks where we learn more about the origins of the mission and why Ryland was selected. In the meantime, we get a riveting present-time plot filled with discovery, journey, and many twists. I enjoyed this layout, and it allowed the story to unfold rather than info-dumping information. I found myself looking forward to the flashbacks as well as the present-day.

One way the writing was genuinely outstanding is the science behind all of Ryland's decisions. Ryland is such a witty and unique narrator, and he also explains all the science behind each issue and how he fixes it. The science presents itself in small pieces, and it extremely easy to digest, but it makes the book feel incredibly real and plausible. Not only is the premise widely unique, but it truly felt like this could happen.

Characters:
Ryland is such a great protagonist and, overall, a fantastic narrator for that book. Furthermore, everybody he meets in the flashbacks is incredibly distinct and entertaining as well. Although Grace is alone for most of this trip, I specifically would like to mention Rocky's character. Without giving anything away, I must say he is one of the most exciting and dynamic characters of all time. I love Rocky!!!

Conclusion:
I may be jumping the gun here, but Project Hail Mary maybe my #1 science fiction release this year. I adored this book. From the first page, it was impossible to put down. I loved reading from the perspective of Ryland Grace, and I wish we could have gotten more. I am so sad the book ended. This book intertwined an ingenious science fiction plot that was thrilling, tense, and smart, along with the wittiness and comedic relief from the characters. It is truly a work of art, and I 100% cannot recommend it enough!

i loved the martian very much, and so to hear that andy was putting out another book had me really excited. this book was amazing, it had me laughing and sometimes borderline crying. it was easy to take in with all of the science and math in it, and i found it to be an easy read.
