This book reminds me a lot of The Martian. Not the story, but the goofy, self-narrative that is almost half of the book, not that I mind about it. It gives Ryland Grace, the main character, a little bit of humbleness and humanness that we can't all be scientific and serious at the same time. We can be stupid, telling ourselves stupid jokes and think that we can get away with it, when we're ALONE.

Yes, he's alone. In Space. Familiar? 

Ryland Grace woke up in a spaceship all alone (although he didn't reveal much in the start, but there's a chart of a spaceship on the beginning of the book and that you know the book is about space, so not much clue wasted there) and he had no clue where he was going or how he ended up there.

But he gained his memory little by little and what he remembers will shock you! HAHA, enough with the clickbait, get on reading...

Wow. Just wow. I was reluctant on reading Project Hail Mary because I have never been interested in the Sci-Fi genre and boy am I ever glad I gave it a shoot. This my first space oriented book and my second ever sci-fi book after Dark Matter and it did not disappoint. The main character has so much charm and likability! And the other articulated science I would have never understood on my own incredibly well. I thought the ending was perfect and had me making audible noise of despair and excitement. I do have to say it felt a little long, but it's still a 5 star rating for me.

The hype is real - I would recommend Project Hail Mary to anyone who's on the fence like I once was.

Part interesting, part meh. Narrator's tone was pretty annoying even though the science was interesting. I'm glad that I finished it but not feeling compelled to read more.

Let me just start by saying: reading science fiction is always weird for me because I subconsciously fact-check the whole thing in my head. Sometimes I take science fiction too seriously, it's meant to be fiction after all. The whole thing where a scientist is mysteriously drawn to a international collaboration project often happen in science fiction but sometimes I just feel it to be not realistic (I know, it's fiction, I should be more chill about it). However there's some amount of reality in Weir's character Grace. I like how the story is told back and forth and not linearly, it gives it a mystery while the book slowly reveals what's happening in the book. The alien Grace encounter, Rocky is surprisingly very adorable and interesting character. That's what I admire from Weir's work: despite there being so many scientific 'theory-dropping' he's still able to develop the characters in the book adequately. The science is sound too-- and from the Acknowledgements I saw that Weir had a lot of science consulting on his part of writing the book. Although I have to complain that Grace's character is supposed to be a microbiologist but he seems to be able to conquer stuff that I suppose is not within a microbiologist's knowledge. "But he's a science teacher!!" yeah and how do you suppose a science teacher could accurately calculate a trajectory to a planet he's never been before accurately especially considering relativistic calculation? It just kind of irked me a bit but otherwise this has been a really interesting read and a good sci-fi.

Thoroughly enjoyed this! Was not expecting this to be such a feel good book. In a way this was less scientific than and more interpersonal relationship building than i expected but i really really enjoyed the whole thing. The book went by so quickly and i love the tone of this.

Really fun book. Not at all what I expected (my reference point was the movie adaptation of The Martian). This was lighter, funnier, and more warm hearted than expected. Definitely falls into the category of “competency porn.”

had a hard time continuing tbh (i literally forgot all the science-y cosmic physics stuff) regardless, i still genuinely enjoyed it maybe bec everything just felt so endearing to me :( 

one thing that I’ve got from this book is that feelings and emotions are the most universal thing in the entirety of space and it’s the one thing that brings us, all of us, regardless of who or what we are, together !!! 

this is among those kinds of book that pushes me to continue to believe in and hope for mankind and all that is out there. 

AND i would love to explore the cosmos with rocky and grace !!

Wow wow wow wow WOW.

I fell in love with The Martian a couple of years ago. First the movie, then the book. I love Weir’s writing style and characters. I love the science, even if I don’t understand most of it. Mostly I love the overarching theme of hope in his books. Humans suck most of the time, but when one of our own is in trouble-or in Project Hail Mary’s case, the entire species-we can work together and we figure it out. We are full of hope. We are hope. 

Dr. Grace and Rocky will now forever be two of my favorite characters. I love them. I love The Martian. I love Project Hail Mary. 

I stayed up to finish this book and it’s 1am now, so I’m going to stop writing and go to sleep before I continue to ramble.

When the book is so good you can’t put it down. Spent two days in the jungle with no signal, which was a great reason to keep reading.

Project Hail Mary is a spectacular example of how with great storytelling, any complex concept can be understood by the audience, whether with their consent or not. Truly a master of the craft, will look forward to reading Mr Weir’s other books.
