Angela Scott

This is the story of a twelve year old girl, Samantha, and her brother, Jacob, who is fifteen. They conceal the death of their mother and try to outrun their past by traveling from West Virginia to Arizona. The adult world proves difficult to navigate for two kids on their own. When Sam meets "Jesus" life takes a different turn since he may be willing to help Sam and Jacob, if only they admit what took place that fateful day in West Virginia.

This book is unlike any other book I've ever read. In a totally awesome way. It blew me away! It felt like this was a true story. That's how the good the story was and how authentic the voice sounded. I'm a writer myself and I know how hard it can be to really nail a character's voice, but Angela Scott seemed to do it effortlessly. This book was also suspenseful since I wanted to know what had happened to their mother (they're dragging her body into the house in the beginning). I find myself rooting for Sam and her older brother as they attempt to start new lives for themselves. This book has a lot of mature material, but I think it's realistic at the same time. I definitely recommend Desert Rice. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be completely surprised at the end. Can't wait for Desert Flower!
