1/8/20 Woah wait a minute, why did I never write a review for this?? I guess it was for English class (10th), so maybe I figured I'd written enough about it (a speech :) Anyways, I don't really know why I gave this 4 stars because from what I remember, I didn't particularly love many parts of it. I remember it feeling VERY LONG, slow, repetitive, and extra depressing. That being said, there was a sort of overall wholesome feel to the story (I often get that feeling from long books where I am with the book for a long time), so maybe that's why I gave it 4 stars. I don't have anything else to say really.....

This is one of the books that got me back into reading again. I loved the way that as Frank grew, the writing grew as well. When he was 5, it was written as a 5 yr old would write. Very well done.

I didn't know what to expect when I started Angela's Ashes, as I'd heard so many varied things - always good but ranging between hilarious and depressing, which is hard to do. Angela's Ashes truly is both. Frank McCourt has such an incredibly child-like, lighthearted way of telling his story, and his family's story, despite the first 19-20 years being incredibly depressing. I found myself laughing at some of the things he recounted, and then immediately cringing when I realized the nature of what he was saying. It made me think of all the times my Irish grandmother said "starving kids in Ireland..." and I can finally fully understand the gravity of that.

If you're looking for a rich, compelling autobiography, this is the one.

This is a very difficult story to read (or listen to) just because of the harsh realities portrayed in the book. What makes it so difficult is the fact that these harsh realities were unfortunately all too real for many other children like Frank McCourt, children who lack McCourt's gift of storytelling. 
Memoirs/autobiographies are a bit difficult to review because they lack many of the structural aspects of a novel or a nonfiction biography.
That being said, McCourt navigates through his life telling the story of his childhood with brutal honesty that never stoops to begging for sympathy. That's a huge plus in my opinion. 
The one thing I don't understand (though I probably could with a little research) is the significance/relation of the title to the story. I know his mother's name is Angela but this is a memoir about his life... The fault is most likely on my end for not picking up on the significance. 
I definitely recommend this book but with the qualification to be prepared because this beautiful story is definitely not pretty.

That Pulitzer Prize is totally well-earned. He totally makes you feel involved in this story and the use of present tense adds more reality and tension to it. Highly recommended!
