Ann Veronica is a young woman struggling with the restrictions of Edwardian Society, restrictions of aristocracy and restrictions of woman. We are taken on a journey of Ann Veronica trying to break these boundaries from attending a University and getting a degree in Biology, running away from home and innocently getting involved with a scoundrel , arrested for participating in the woman’s suffrage movement, returning home as the protocol daughter indebted to the scoundrel, finding herself suddenly engaged to a man she doesn’t love. The ultimate break from society’s restrictions is when she runs away with a married man. A forward thinking book for the time, well written and engaging. At times Ann Veronica can seem highly intelligent and very knowledgeable and forward thinking, sometimes saying she is “really a man.” But yet, she is also innocent of the true world and is left in tight predicaments. A good read and the audible was excellently narrated.
