Anthony Burgess

Anthony Burgess (1917-1993) was a British novelist, critic and composer. He was also a librettist, poet, playwright, screenwriter, journalist, essayist, travel writer, and educationalist. I could listen to Burgess ramble on about language, modernism, the novel, Joyce, writing, music, his time in Brunei and Malaya for ever. Although they are interviews they are very addictive, in addition to being erudite. He also spends time musing about novels in the works and it's interesting, and a bit sad, to note in retrospect how many made it to publication and which ones never saw the light. The interviews raise the theme of Burgess' Catholicism all too often; while he is more than willing to respond to these prompts, his views on other topics such as the literary canon and the state of the novel, felt more refreshing and insightful.
