Laika es una perrita mestiza, ingenua y nerviosa que nunca ha salido de Cocula, el pueblo donde nació. Pero un día viaja a la ciudad de Guadalajara en busca de su padre, un perro legendario por fiero que cuida un taller. Por el camino Laika se pierde en la ciudad, tiene que vivir en la calle y termina siento adoptada, para su suerte, por una familia local que ya tiene otra perrita, más vieja y quejosa pero que termina por aceptarla como compañera. Justo cuando ya estaba habituándose a su nueva vida la familia de Laika se muda a Alemania, y ella tiene que enfrentarse de nuevo a la migración, pero esta vez a otro país. Para empezar, debe tolerar que la metan en una jaula a un avión en el que viajan los animales de un circo, y luego llegar a un país que no tiene nada que ver con el suyo, lleno de perros educados de otro modo y que ladran en un idioma extraño.
