I was particularly interested in the transformation of obstetrics from craft to scientific industry, driven in large part to the objective, immediate feedback of the Apgar score, a simple measure that drives improvement and pushes innovation in the field. Highly recommended.

This is a superb book- A must read for everyone. The author brings in a concept I never thought about before. He says while we all talk about innovation , nobody speaks about diligence. It is actually doing the right thing every time day in and day out that has saved millions of lives.
Just aiming for better in the medical world has saved more lives than any one disruptive innovation. This holds lessons for businesses and daily lives too. 
The chapter on Indian doctors and the ingenuity with which they treat their patients is both amazing and scary at the same time.
Overall an amazing book. You just can't put this one down.

Good read on the parts of being a doctor you don't think of

I always like to read books from the medical and other professional service fields and Gawande is a favourite of mine - somehow I missed this even though it's been out for a while. 
I think that doctors and teachers have a lot of shared experiences and his discussions on improving performance are spot on to many of the things we often try to develop as teachers. 
His discussion focuses on three main areas: diligence, ingenuity, and what it means to do right by people and definitely resounded with my experience.
