Batman: Hush

Brilliant! I thought I had it all figured out, but the story caught me off guard and the way it all unravels at the end is perfect.

Really? Really GoodReads? 17k 5 stars? Seriously now?! I'm accepting that 17k 5 star rating if all of those 17k are like 13 year olds, then yeah ok. I get that. Other than that nope. This was just ok at best. Here's my problem with it. Problems, actually, I can't fathom the idea of how so many people like this and/or consider it a must Batman story, or even a great Bats story. Even most of my friends who read comics. I knew nothing of Hush besides that it's a must Batman story, which I somehow never read besides having read so much Batman over the years. So, SPOILERS from now on: So the story starts and the main thing we have here, besides Bats being placed against villains and controlled Supes and whatnot, is the childhood friend of his Tommy Elliott. And right away we got a brand new mysterious villain with a covered face and shit.. are you fucking kidding me? Greatest Detective of the World my ass. Right then and there I knew this was the guy. And I'm not a detective, I'm not even the guy who can tell who's the murderer on books/stories/comics so it's pretty much obvious if *I* can tell. Other than that the diagolue is ok, and it had it's moments but not enough to cover the fact of how boring and obvious it was and how much Loeb dumbed Batman down to make him oblivious of the fact that Hey, maybe the guy who's behind everything is the guy that SUDDENLY came back into your life. My second and much more serious problem with it, is the motivation Hugh had to do all this? That was stupid as fuck. Get this, dude tried to kill Bats because back when they were kids, Tommy had rich parents too, and he wanted them dead, so he can inherit all the money, and when they were in an accident or whatever the fuck it was, his mom survived and was saved by Bruce's father?! So he wants revenge FOR THAT. Because his father saved his mother and he had to live until his mother died of cancer and THEN he inherited all the money, even though he was already successful and rich either way. Oh my GOD. I swear that was his problem with Bats. Not only that, but guess what? No payoff in the story with Hush, nope. Nothing. Nada. Disappeared into the night... Nope. Lucky I'm not rating this 1 star, and that's because of the artwork. I kinda liked the finale, like the last couple of pages with what happens with Bats and you'll-see-who if you read it but meh, was already disappointed by the whole story and Hush, as it was that it wasn't enough to cover the fact of how dumb it was overall.

definitely one of my fav batman volumes so far

After hearing about this book and waiting to read it for years, I was a bit letdown (especially as I unfortunately knew the twist). The plot itself was exciting, as it seemed nearly every Batman character was wrapped in this growing mystery, but it soon became a "fight-the-villain-of-the-issue" type affair. Hoped for more mystery and different kinds of combat, and whilst there were small deviations which threw me off course and I enjoyed, overall the book didn't hold any thematic exploration of who Batman or Gotham was as a character. A very good read if you just want an awesome Batman story though.
