I've managed to start reading the sixth book in a series when I haven't read any of the ones before, but it was still good, and I could catch up on most bits!

This felt a lot like The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, except it was set in the UK. Influence by a dark wizard, has an apprentice, is apt to go a bit lone wolf, but has a lot of friends who will help him.
