This was enjoyable enough, but I really had to force myself to sit down and finish it. Nothing really captivated me or made me want to keep reading. The premise of the story is interesting, but it was awfully predictable and there was a serious lack of character development. I didn't care enough about Gaia to want to know what she would do next.

I really want to say I loved this, and that it was the best thing I read this past summer, but sadly I can not say those things because they would be false.

The cover had me all excited, and the blurb on the back had me thinking it would be a five star, but it wasn't.

It's not that this book was particularly bad... it just wasn't all that great.

It struck me as your typical blasé dystopia novel.

Granted, there were some good twists. It wasn't completely unoriginal. Gaia had a sweet voice, and wasn't your typical Mary Sue, or "pretty girl". The scars she received as a child made her original. And the fact that her Love interest, Leon, could see through them made he all the more lovable. 

The Point: If you love dystopia, and are looking for something to fill the time I would recommend you pick this up. If your reading time is tight, skip it and read something a bit more enticing. (The Hunger Games perhaps?)

I decided to buy this book after having read a couple of reviews on Goodreads. My expectations were quite high, and the book did not disappoint! While reading, I felt like the whole world -- the Enclave, Wharfton, the Tvaltar -- was really well described and I could easily picture it in my mind. The book is dystopian, and set some 300-400 years in the future. The climate has changed and it’s incredibly hot, lakes have dried out and it almost never rains. It all seemed very realistic with all the global warming stuff that goes on today.
 
I liked Gaia as a main character; she’s brave, intelligent and kind. She’s not had the best childhood in the world, but she’s always had her parents to lean on. But suddenly that changes, too. And that’s where the book starts off!
 
The code thing was brilliant! I love when books have these little riddles and symbols that the author invites you to solve with the main character as the story progresses. I have to admit that I did not figure it out by myself!
 
I didn’t quite feel the romance in the book, but I feel like the action and all the things happening were more important anyway, so it didn’t matter much. The end was pretty heartbreaking, though. And everything with Maya -- awww! Yes, I did get a little teary-eyed at times. But I won’t spoil you -- read the book! It’s good, I promise.

Em 2010, a autora que herdou o seu nome gaélico de um lago irlandês que nunca viu, deixou de dar aulas para se dedicar à escrita a tempo inteiro. Enquanto fazia uma viagem pelos Estados Unidos, Caragh começou a pensar nas alterações climáticas e, consequentemente, nas alterações politicas e sociais que daí adviriam nos próximos anos. Semanas depois, Birthmarked começava a ser escrito.
Primeiro livro da autora, foi publicado em 2011 e dá início à trilogia com o mesmo nome. Está traduzido para francês, alemão, chinês, espanhol, turco, português do Brasil e português de Portugal pela Everest que só publicou o primeiro livro. Foi nomeado para sete prémios e ganhou dois deles.
Uma distopia que passava quase despercebida, Birthmarked acabou por se revelar uma surpresa, que apesar das suas falhas, deixa uma vontade imensa de continuar a ler os volumes seguintes. Caragh traz-nos uma história que apela aos leitores pelos seus temas, uma história que difere das restantes distopias e que promete um percurso senão admirável, pelo menos surpreendente. Com uma escrita agradável mas que precisava de um bocadinho mais de emoção, a autora traz-nos um novo mundo que entre uma visão futurista e outra mais retrógrada, mostra bem as diferenças advindas de quem detém o poder ou não, de uma sociedade abastada e outra com mais necessidades e dos sacrifícios feitos pelos mais fracos para se puder manter um equilíbrio que está prestes a desfazer-se.
Os temas de Birthmarked, primam pela originalidade, já que esta sociedade distópica assenta na reprodução e genética e nos problemas que delas advém. Ao longo da narrativa é abordada a preocupação pelas origens de cada individuo, pela sua educação e bem-estar, fala-se das ligações aos pais biológicos e aos adoptivos, dos sacrifícios feitas pela protecção dos filhos, dos problemas genéticos causados pelos casamentos entre pares com ADN parecido, temas obscuros que assombram esta história e lhe dá um ar sombrio completamente inesperado. A autora foi talentosa na demonstração destes temas e na forma como os inseriu na história, criando uma narrativa de passo rápido e fácil leitura que não deixa de abordar assuntos de relevância. Toda a construção do wolldbuilding está bem estudada, bem como os pormenores que interligam as duas sociedades, as suas diferenças sociais, económicas e políticas. Também no cerne psicológico, a autora deixa-nos a pensar com atitudes e pensamentos de certas personagens e, algumas questões éticas e morais, que além de controversas são bastante estimulantes.
Mas, como já havia dito acima, esta narrativa não deixa de ter as suas falhas, mesmo assim. Ao longo da leitura pareceu-me sempre que faltava algo. Uma certa profundidade e complexidade, momentos atordoantes e emocionais, que ajudassem o leitor a ligar-se às personagens. Nunca existe uma sensação de perigo ao longo do enredo, a sociedade governante nunca nos consegue realmente assustar e os mistérios são demasiado fáceis bem como se irá desenvolver a história. Falhas, sem dúvida, mas que não retiram o prazer da leitura, apenas não deixa o livro tornar-se em algo mais majestoso.
Quanto às personagens, mais uma falha da autora. Não que não sejam interessantes mas falta profundidade às relações entre elas, falta emoção às suas personalidades, falta algo de imperfeitamente humano. Gaia, a protagonista, no início é uma jovem muito crédula e perfeitinha, muito inocente mas acaba por crescer ao longo da narrativa e mostrar que afinal tem garras e sabe pensar pela sua própria cabecinha. A relação amorosa demora a evoluir e falta-lhe chama, apesar de Leon ser uma personagem interessante pelas suas dúvidas pessoais e atitudes. Já as personagens secundárias, são imensas e a autora não nos consegue apresentar a todas de uma forma que elas sejam mais do que apêndices para a história, havendo algumas que ainda estou para saber de onde apareceram.
Caragh M. O’Brien estreia-se de uma forma satisfatória que espero que evolua nos próximos volumes, já que, apesar de imperfeito, Birthmarked não deixa de ser uma leitura que nos faz pensar.
