I love this series. 

Naomi Novik has written one of the most incredible fantasy series with dragons as the protagonists. And dragons unlike any others who seem closer to humans than to animals. 

I honestly recommend this to all fantasy lovers. If you've never read this series, believe me, you are missing out.

Probably the most insipid of the Temeraire books, Black Powder War, in its desire to gather its cultural affiliations, leaves you snoring on the silk diwans of Turkey. While Novik is busy linking Napoleon's schemes to her plot, the story loses pace, pulls to a lazy trot, and is saved only by a rather terrific climax, which, in itself, would never have gleamed so much had it not been preceded by long, ponderous sequences of desert crawl. If anything, what this book does is instill a faint sense of belonging to this old world, one that even in its banality, feels like home.

As always, the world and the concepts of how the dragons have altered our reality is very interesting. Additionally, this building discussion of the rights of dragons as sentient beings is really enjoyable. However, the action in this book is fairly disappointing to me.

The best thing about this book for me was the character Tharkay, honestly. I'm still not sure how your guide can manage to sneak off without you in the middle of the desert, but apparently he manages. I really do wish either he or Granby were the main character. Laurence is so boring and prideful - he alone almost makes me want to put the series down entirely. (Knowing me, though, I have to see things through to the end.)

The characters are still great. I'm a fan of the world building too. That said, the movement of the story is a bit weak and some of the action is a bit tedious. I'll keep reading these books, but with a bit less gusto than the first 3.
